Armstrong bought out

That's a bit surprising. Bad Business Burke - no wonder the Leafs are having a hard time luring FAs.

Now do you see what I was saying about your jokes in that other thread?

He bought him out instead of waiving/demoting him.

Right before the CBA expires too - I'm sure the PA loves this one. It's not good business - if he was bought out because he's struggled to stay healthy then that's even worse.

That doesn't sit well with me at all, I know it's not my money and it's not a fun thing for a player but I'd rather they bury him. That lingering cap hit coupled with Tucker's just blows. Maybe there's some truth to cba changes and burying contracts, maybe it's about 'character' and remaining player friendly so I'll hold off completely condemning this on the face of it but it rubs me the wrong way right now.

Good luck to Colby, great guy.

Or maybe they're planning on sending Lombardi to the Marlies and want to limit the number of big money contracts they have down there taking up roster spots that should be filled by younger guys. The $1M on the cap this year isn't a big deal - there's not much to spend on this summer, but, it could be an issue next summer.

It's next summers cap that's bugging me the most. You could be right about Lombardi, plus likely Colton Orr. If Burke is trying to make the Leafs a player friendly roster it makes some sense I suppose but why ok for one and not the other?

Blah.

I bought out that joke - I cared too much about it.

Well, that's pretty simple - Lombardi is a centre, Armstrong isn't. The Leafs have a lot of guys who can play on the wing, but they need depth down the middle.

I meant about sending him to the Marlies as opposed to that, Lombardi not a 'character' guy?

At least they bit the bullet instead of trying to make him fit next year, and give up a roster spot a kid could probably fill.

Too bad. He was the right type of player just never healthy enough to make it happen.

Colby Armstrong will receive $8M from the Leafs for 79 games played, 9 goals, and 17 assists.

Ouch.

He got paid and has a chance to be picked up by any other team in the league for nothing. I don't see how the PA would be upset with that. Do they really want to protect guys who make millions and bring nothing to their team?  That's good business sense on their part.

Well, it's roster management as well. Of the 4 contracts fans don't like, Armstrong's came with the lowest buyout cap hit and he played in a position where the Leafs had a fair amount of depth. All this character guy stuff is really just window dressing for the business side stuff.

Certainly never expected this coming, but I suppose when you think about it, it makes sense. I guess management wasn't really convinced he could return from his injuries, plus it gives us a little more room for tomorrow.

In my experiences with unions they usually get a little fussy if someone losses their job over health problems / issues.
How many of his own contracts has Burke had to buy out now?

You're going to have explain why, because I don't see it.

Simple, cause he's a Sens fan.

I think I liked our arrangement better when you had me on ignore.

It's summer time man and I'm BBQing. The attacks won't pick up steam until closer to September. :-)

When you get 2/3 of your remaining salary and a chance to earn more elsewhere, it's fine, the NHLPA isn't your run of the mill union.

And contracts bought out? With Armstrong, that's a grand total of 1.

Wasn't Orr bought out?
