Armstrong bought out

Colby was great in the room.... but then he should be, he spent so much time there.

I suppose the oft injured UFA signing roster spot was taken by Tim Connolly who is a veteran at that position.

Still, it will be interesting to see how we replace Armstrong's 3 points.

Statistically, he will be hard to replace.  He and Crosby are like that.

I was never a fan and thought he was a bit immature, though sometimes entertaining.

I'd much rather someone like Frattin get a spot.

Seems like the logical replacement.

I don't mind the buyout at all. Armstrong had negative value. When he did play, he was either invisible or awful. Good riddance. Now Burke has to figure out how to fix/shed/hide/trade the rest of his horrible UFA signings.

Hopefully while grabbing another return like Lupul and Gardiner in the process.

I have a hard time believe Burke couldn't at least get a late draft pick for him.

You're right, Burke was offered a pick but flatly turned it down saying "no, I'm buying this guy out"

I can't help but wonder if they could have traded him to MTL for a low draft pick.  I mean its not like MTL is up against the cap or anything.

That doesn't mean they wanted to spend $3M on him when they valued him closer to $1M. If Burke could have moved him for a pick, he would have. If Montreal really wanted him that badly, they could have claimed him off waivers before he was bought out instead of waiting and competing with other teams to sign him.

By doing it this way MTL spends less cap space and real dollars and doesn't waste a pick.

its just one year of overpaying.  If your not against the cap that year shouldn't matter.  Then next year you can try to lower this salary.

Well, clearly, it did. They weren't willing to trade anything him or even claim him when he was on waivers as part of the buyout process. They wouldn't take him for free when his cap hit and salary were $3M. They're also closer to the cap than you think, considering they still have to sign Subban, Eller and some other RFAs and now have less than $9M to work with.

If they didn't pick him up on wavers then obviously they had no interest in paying him 3 million dollars. Forget the cap for a second, that's real money. If they could have him at one million, why should they spend the extra money?

Oh yeah a million here, a million there; sooner or later it starts adding up to real money
