Exactly.  I hate this.  I couldn't care how much he costs this year because there's no useful way to spend his money.

But at, the same time, we're talking about $1M on a cap that will likely be in the $65M-$70M range. It could be an issue, but, it's unlikely to be a significant issue.

I also very much doubt that Burke didn't look into trade options first. I understand why he didn't want to demote Armstrong to the A.

Agreed, Bender. I seriously doubt buying him out was Burke's first choice strategy.

Especially since it happened on the final day of the buyout period.

I have a suspicion that maybe other teams were saying "Well, if you're trying to unload a bad contract, you can take on one of ours!"

I'm not sure if a deal like that would've been better than a buyout.

Firstly, BOO!. I was hoping to see some pre-Leaf Army this season.  :( and seceondly, yeah, there better be some plans for that 2 mil.

Well, as sad as I am to see Army go, I maintained the Leafs should somehow rid themselves of at least two of the Armstrong, Connolly, Lombardi, and Komisarek contracts... Next up?

I'm just a conservative personality.  Why take the risk if you don't need to?  What if the cap gets cut 30% and goes back down to $40-50 million like at the last CBA?  We've seen top teams get that last superstar on their roster by pushing right up to the edge of the cap.  I would hate to see that 1 million be the reason that we could only give Getzlaf a $7 million offer and Detroit gives him an $8 million offer and he goes with Detroit ...

I just view that as one of the risks of being a professional hockey player.  The upside is you get paid 10s of millions of dollars over your carreer.  The downside is that your career is short and you can get sent to the minors if your boss wants to (and you didn't sign a NMC).

If anything remotely close to that is on the table, we won't be seeing NHL hockey any time soon, so, the $1M the Leafs will have on the cap for the 13/14 season will be the least of the team's problems.

There are a number of ways to work around that. On top of that, if Getzlaf wants $8M instead of $7M, I hope he does sign with Detroit. If a player wants a full $1M more per year than what the Leafs are offering, there's not a marriage to be made there.

I'm sure Burke would have looked at trade options first, no way he'd just buy him out if he could get something (even a long shot 7th round pick). There had to be no interest in him (at least for something in return). Some GM might take a shot at him for nothing.

well, poo.  I can think of several others I'd rather have seen gone than Colby Armstrong. Whoever picks him up, thank you, and Colby, I hope next time you play the Leafs you score a bucketful of goals and beat them.

I think his body is getting worn down from the style he plays. Don't know how effective he'll be when another team picks him up.  He'll probably continue being in and out of the lineup for the rest of his career.

I could see Army signing in Carolina and mutual interest form Rutherford. There isn't much depth there on their right side right now... His bud J. Staal is there now. Lots of ex-Leafs with varying degrees of success there after leaving Toronto. I don't know, just for fun, I predict that's where he winds up.

I am never a fan of buyouts, but if you had to do one this made sense.

Kind of funny that we'll be eating cap hits on 2 players who everyone hates -- unless they are on your team, in which case they are "character guys."

Simmons, as usual, chimes in with the easy cheap shot.  However, does anyone know what our record was in games that he DID play?  I seem to remember that we did better than normal when he was in the lineup.  That would be too much work for a guy like Simmons to do... I know it is for me.  Then again, I don't get paid to write about the Leafs.

38-33-8 with him (87 point pace). 34-38-13 without him (78 point pace).

That strikes me as being well within the margin that means nothing at all.
