Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

That's what I've read and heard generally. Next year is supposed to be a great year with depth. This year maybe the top 2-3 are good/above average but the rest are more depth bottom roster players BUT I could be wrong in what I have heard. I hope so. If this is true we'll probably win the lottery.... :P

This is from January but it kind of reinforces this years draft being meh...

Anyone have any thoughts on Jake Virtanen?

That would be my choice for the Leafs if they cannot trade up. Big strong winger, who can skate and shoot. Considered the most prototypical power forward in the draft.

Are any of these top 3 in the draft really significant players as compared to previous years?  It strikes me as this draft is pretty soft for impact players. Good players but meh compared to other years.

Is that the general consensus though? I haven't really heard that from the so called experts.

I think the draft in general this year is not a great one.  I mean there are some players who could end up as high reward players but I really don't look at anyone in the top 10 and say "guaranteed star".  That's not necessarily a bad thing because I think there are still some really good players but it's not a draft to get that guy who redefines your franchise.

On the surface it definitely doesn't look like a draft to improve your blueline too.

If we could get Ekblad somehow by moving up, I'd be thrilled, he looked amazing at the Worlds at some points.

Maybe trade 8th overall and Reimer for 2nd overall or something.

I agree. I suggested something similar on the last page. I'd be prepared to offer Phaneuf/Franson/Reimer in some sort of package or combination to acquire the number 2 pick in Ekblad. So the deal would be #8 (plus/plus) for #2.

If thats the case, then is there really any benefit in offering up assets to move up the draft??

Ha Ha.  Just saw the Vancouver score this morning.

I wonder if MLSE can accuse them of tampering.  Based on Van's attitude towards the leafs in recent years, I wouldn't doubt the team was instructed to lose.  :P

Probably not. Outside of the top 2 or 3 guys (which aren't likely be available - it's been a long time since a team that knew it was picking in the top 3 traded their pick), you're looking at guys that are likely 3 seasons away from becoming full time NHLers. I mean, moving up a couple spots by throwing late picks or mediocre RFAs that you couldn't get value for might be worthwhile, but, it's definitely not worth offering up some of the assets you've mentioned.

So it's the 8th overall pick, barring any unexpected results from the lottery on Tuesday. After a season that was derailed from a losing streak to finish, this really isn't too bad of a consolation prize.

Another top 10 pick, and continued development.... slowly but surely. My philosophy is, if they aren't ready to compete for the cup, than it's better to continue to draft at the highest possible positions until they are ready.

Something tells me this years draft won't be another quiet one for Nonis and company. Could be one where they make a big splash. Interesting week ahead...

Your philosophy is one that is also shared by others such as myself. The Leafs have done a wise job of collecting and honing players without jeopardizing their future. Yes. However, they need some top end talent in the farm system. I wouldn't mind it if the Leafs left this draft with only 2 - 3 draft choices, out of the 8 picks we have.

Yep - Mckenzie specifically mentioned that vs previous years.

I'd try and acquire the best defenseman available at this years draft (Ekblad), and then at the conclusion of next years season ending slide to the bottom, I'd draft McDavid.  ;)

Question? How did Colbourne end up with Calgary in points, I thought if he reached a certain plateau that we would get a 2nd pick instead of a 3rd?
