General Leafs Talk: Post-Olympics Edition

Hockey-reference.com added a bunch of new features relating to player awards. One of them is a listing of the voting results for all the major awards. This information was always out there if you knew where to look but it wasn't easy sometimes so it's great to see it all in one location. Anyway I was looking through some of the results from last season and found that somebody actually gave Kadri a 4th place vote for the Selke last season. He technically finished higher in the polling than Bozak who received two 5th place votes. You can see the results here:

The list of guys on that list who got one 4th place vote for the Selke is pretty bizarre.

It's amazing the amount of votes that are just completely thrown away in these things. It almost ruins the integrity of the awards when you see the results. I wish there were two rounds of voting. This would be the first round, then the top-5 or so players are announced and everybody votes again on those guys.

I've brought this one up before, but there was actually somebody on the planet that thought Ray Emery was the best goalie in the league last season. I mean I know his stats were great, but come on.

I've always assumed that the really crazy votes come from US local writers biding their time until a football assignment opens up.

The crazy thing is that whoever cast that vote was an NHL GM last season. I'm going to assume it was Holmgren.

Just looked at remaining schedule and Leafs have only 7 home games remaining! Yikes. Playoffs around the corner.

Hah, yeah I forgot about that part.

Thanks to @Hope_Smoke for linking to it.

The piece at the end about transitioning from a bubble team to a contender is pretty much what frustrates me with the team.

Burke on Kessel, read from the bottom up.

@Hope_Smoke  1m
Burke "Chiarelli would make that deal again and so would I"

‏@Hope_Smoke  39s
Burke "people now would say that deal helped both teams. Kessel is world class & Bos turned that deal into Hamilton, Smith & whatever else"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke  1m
Burke "It was an expensive price [to acquire Kessel] but how do you think you're going to get players like that without paying a price?"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke  2m
Burke "there was a lot of heat around the Kessel deal. I'm fortunate that I don't pay attention to any of that background stuff"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke  2m
Burke "Kessel is an elite player. He was just as good last season as he has been this season"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke  3m
Burke "I knew we had to get him just by his evolution as a pro from that interview to where I had him in the World Championships in Halifax"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke  4m
Burke "Kessel's draft interview was pathetic. No eye contact and lousy body language. Just terrible"

Burke "It was an expensive price [to acquire Kessel] but how do you think you're going to get players like that without paying a price?

....I don't know Brian...drafting them second overall? That could work.

Yeah, I like a lot of what's been done to the team over the last 5 years or so, but in the last couple it feels like things are stalling somewhat.  I hope they are able to shore up these trouble areas going forward, but I feel that it will be difficult with their cap situation.

He would probably counter that having poor teams is the 'price' in that instance.

So, the additional price that Burke's Leafs teams paid?

I'm just saying his general statement that getting an elite player requires a 'price' is not incorrect, the price paid is simply different in form and substance depending on the circumstances.

No, I got what you were saying. What I was saying that his general statement that getting an elite player requires a price is incorrect if his definition of price includes a team being awful when that team is going to be awful regardless.

Burkie paid the required price for Kessel.
The "drafting them second overall" does not work in TO, because our teams have not been that bad. IMO The NHL is not going to let a team like TO win the draft Lottery.

I dont know why this is still coming up in post "Kessel" has been worth everything Burke gave for him. That is all.

I think the point was, the Leafs were that bad the year they made the Kessel trade.  Without Kessel in the lineup, Leafs may very well have been the worst team in the league, instead of 2nd worst as they ended up.

He did pay more of a price by getting a great young player who had already been developed. It's true, clearly Kessel had to mature a bit more as a player to get to where he is right now, but he did have three years on Boston to speed up that process for the Leafs.

I thought Burke also admitted on record that he misjudged the team when he acquired Kessel and didn't realize that they were going to be a terrible hockey team. That's not ideal, but it makes the price a little bit more reasonable from his end.

Yeah, especially the goaltending.  He was shocked how bad Toskala was.
