Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

moon111 said:
A team can win a Cup with goaltending like Vernon or Osgood.  With goaltenders being a gamble, maybe the Leaf's best option is too stay with the status-quo and upgrade in other areas.

Bozak and Kadri rumoured to be involved in the Luongo deal and Frattin rumoured to be involved in the Bernier deal are 3 of our best players this season.  If the team were a Luongo away from the Cup, jump in, but the team in it's present situation did not warrant that deal.  I am just so happy management realized that and Reimer and Scrivens have performed well enough to not persuade them to act harshly.

I agree.  This team is showing thus far that Burke should not have been fired.  If they make the playoffs I will eat my words.  I never liked Burke but I like what I'm seeing with this team so far.  There is definitely hope for the future.  They are only going to get better.

Would Burke send his pricy acquisition Tim Connolly to the Marleis to make room for Kadri? Would Burke send Lombardi packing to make room for Frattin/Komarov? I am not sure. Those were Nonis moves.

I think Burke probably would have made the Lombardi trade, but I don't see him sending Connolly to the Marlies.

You have to think the timing of his firing was related to what's happening this season, or at least the possibility of it. There would be no way they could fire him now, now that the team has been showing improvement game in and game out.

Though you have to think that the coach has a little bit of influence on the Connolly decision.

I'm sure Carlyle had influence on both decisions, I just think Burke would have been less open to demoting Connolly than Nonis was.

Perhaps, but it's hard to hold something against Burke that he never had a chance to do.

I'm not. I just don't think he would have done it.
Yeah but you should realize that those were minor moves and the bulk of the team's current success can be attributed to Burke.  I have to give credit where credit is due even though I do not like him.

Huh? So the team didn't show any reason to fire him the last couple of seasons?

They are 6-5, not exactly lighting the world on fire. Don't get me wrong, I am pleasantly surprised as well but it's not like they are obliterating teams. 5 of their 6 wins have been by 1 goal and their special teams are atrocious (again).

Overall the Leafs have been competing every night, including against beastly teams like Pittsburgh and Boston.  I think it's only fair to give Burke credit where credit is due.  He built this team.  There is nothing left from Ferguson.  Sure, Nonis made some nice minor moves, but the bulk of our success is attributable to Burke IMO.

Hmmmmm.... what conundrum.  ;D

No idea. I thought they should have run with Reimer right off the beginning. There's never been any question with me that he's the superior goalie of the two.

We have vastly differing opinions on what "success" means.....

And really, the fact that a lot of people (like me) are surprised they are 1 game over .500 and other people (like you) are ready to deem that a success after 11 games...is really an indictment of the Burke era IMO.

Especially since 2 of their 6 wins came against a team that's sitting solidly in 30th place in the league and they only have 2 wins against teams that are currently over .500.

A couple things - Kulemin, Komarov, Reimer, Holzer, Gunnarsson and Frattin are all holdovers from JFJ's era running the team. That's roughly 1/4 of the roster that was brought in by into the fold under JFJ's watch. On top of that, Nonis has made more than some minor moves - even when Burke was GM, Nonis was in charge of some significant moves the Leafs made, like, for instance, he did the majority of the negotiations on the Phaneuf deal. He hasn't done much since Burke was let go, but, to say he's only made minor moves does a great deal of disservice to the work he did as assistant GM.

As has already been mentioned, I also don't consider demoting Connolly a minor move. If he were on the team, I doubt he's toiling on the 3rd or 4th line and then who knows what the team would be like.

And I don't care how he's doing in the AHL.....success down there doesn't translate into success against real NHL competition, as we all know.
