Nonis just vomited all over the table.
So, are we prepared to reopen yesterday's debate as to whether Nonis is an "idiot" or whether he qualifies as a "drooling idiot"?
His moves:
Trade Lombardi
Bury Connolly
Trade Brown
Acquire McLaren
Trade for O'Bryne
Trade Frattin, Scrivens, pick, $500k cap space for Bernier
Trade 2 2nds, 4th for Bolland
Buyout Grabovski (.62 ppg)
Sign Bozak (.53 ppg) for 5 x $4.2m deal
Let MacArthur (.53 ppg) walk into 2 x 3.5m deal
Sign Clarkson (.4 ppg) for 7 x $5.25m deal
Upgrade in goal, no movement at center and defense, and weaker on the wing. Took a bottom-three possession team and let go two of its better possession players, extended one of its worst. What am I missing?
Added one of the best puck possession forwards in the league?
Agreed. And a Kadri-Lupul second line will need that.
But it's at a very high cost, and I think we're spending more for less on the wing than we were at the end of the season.
That remains to be seen how the team shapes up and plays come October and beyond. If Clarkson can score 25+ goals then it's worth the money.
So, skepticism about the wisdom of the Grabbo buyout (and an accurate prediction of what the signings would be) is met with a "let's see what he does with the money."
And skepticism about what he does with the money is met with a "let's see what the money does."
I expect when we've dropped out the playoffs in January the response will be "let's see how April turns out."
