Happy Free Agency Day!

enjoying reading jeff o'neill's tweets today??LOLing my head off "Ottawa hates Alfie more than Toronto" and "I found Grabovski's language offensive"

Mason Raymond might be a cheap depth option that could bring some speed back to the Leafs.

...Boyd Gordon's hit is 3? Hokey doodle.

Remember when the team was locking up the playoff spot and Burke said "sometimes you only set the table, don't get to eat dinner" or something?

Nonis just vomited all over the table.

So, are we prepared to reopen yesterday's debate as to whether Nonis is an "idiot" or whether he qualifies as a "drooling idiot"?

His moves:
Trade Lombardi
Bury Connolly
Trade Brown
Acquire McLaren
Trade for O'Bryne
Trade Frattin, Scrivens, pick, $500k cap space for Bernier
Trade 2 2nds, 4th for Bolland
Buyout Grabovski (.62 ppg)
Sign Bozak (.53 ppg) for 5 x $4.2m deal
Let MacArthur (.53 ppg) walk into 2 x 3.5m deal
Sign Clarkson (.4 ppg) for 7 x $5.25m deal

Upgrade in goal, no movement at center and defense, and weaker on the wing. Took a bottom-three possession team and let go two of its better possession players, extended one of its worst. What am I missing?

Added one of the best puck possession forwards in the league?

Agreed. And a Kadri-Lupul second line will need that.

But it's at a very high cost, and I think we're spending more for less on the wing than we were at the end of the season.

That remains to be seen how the team shapes up and plays come October and beyond.  If Clarkson can score 25+ goals then it's worth the money.

So, skepticism about the wisdom of the Grabbo buyout (and an accurate prediction of what the signings would be) is met with a "let's see what he does with the money."

And skepticism about what he does with the money is met with a "let's see what the money does."

I expect when we've dropped out the playoffs in January the response will be "let's see how April turns out."

And I expect if the Leafs are firmly in a playoff spot by the spring you'll conveniently disappear from the board, or re-signup with a new handle?

Oh no, not at all. Other than watching terrible things happen to mediocre people, watching those with whom I disagree turn out to be wrong is my very favorite pleasure.

Did I hear correct - Bobby Ryan to OTT!?!?!?!

Yup, no details yet.

The Ducks have traded Bobby Ryan to Ottawa for Jakob Silfverberg and a 1st

And no need to buy out a player beforr making that move.

Is one of the guys that they traded their first round pick from this year?

No, Silfverberg was their 2nd rounder in 2009, Noesen they drafted with the pick they got for Mike Fisher and next years first.

I was also thinking of Raymond, we're in sync today Tigger. He might be a bit to pricey for us now though, depends on whether Nonis can trade Liles or make another move.

I am envious of those bastards being able to build around Ryan and Karlsson.

They paid a steep price.  Silverberg and Noesen were two very good prospects for them and they also included a 1st.

Ryan is 2 years away UFA, if he produces, he'll get a large raise too.

Its a good addition, but a significant cost.

:)

I haven't checked the cap situation but as it starts to crunch league wide I don't know how much more than 2 he'll get. I really have no idea what you might get Blum for.

That cap hit for Gordon just slays me, MacT sure wanted him.

Yeah, it's a big gamble on hoping Bobby Ryan really likes Ottawa.

I can't help but think that if we traded a similar package for Ryan (or anyone for that matter), it would be met with negative reactions here.

I don't really know what a similar package would be in a Leafs context. I don't know that the Leafs have anyone who really fits into the Silfverberg sense of "He's going to be top 6, he's just not there quite yet". Gardiner maybe? If it were Gardiner, Biggs and a first?

Apparently Sens were in on Clarkson and when they lost out went with the Ryan move.  Sure Ryan is better but they also had to give up 3 assets for him and might lose him in 3 years to UFA.  Clarkson costs the Leafs money.  Which move will be better?
