Kessel scores how many?

Well, I'm a little bummed that my hopes of Pittsburgh just squeaking into the playoffs, getting Washington in the 1st round and bowing out to leave us with the 15th overall pick won't go down but I guess I'm happy the 1st is pretty safe at this point.

Leafs finish 27th overall, lottery drops them to 7th overall in the draft.

Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, wins the Stanley Cup, puts their draft pick at 30th overall.

You forgot, Edmonton wins the lottery in all scenarios.  ;)

Two more for Kessel tonight in a Pens win.  25 on the season.

That win also clinches a playoff spot for the Pens, so the condition on the Kessel trade has been met. Pittsburgh will send Toronto their 2016 1st round draft pick. Toronto will send Pittsburgh the Penguins 2016 2nd round draft pick that they acquired in the Winnik trade.

Now we just need them to not win any other games for the rest of the year.

You know what? Between Kapanen looking promising and this pick, I've now decided that A) it was a good trade, officially and B) I'm sort of going to root for the Penguins in the playoffs. Yeah, it'll hurt the pick but Phil Kessel, Conn Smythe winner has a ring to it.

I was happy with Kapanen, what stung me about the trade was having to eat salary and having to give back a 2nd rounder. I've grown to accept that eating salary was a necessity, especially since Pittsburgh had a couple of guys who were blocking trades so they couldn't send anything back. Losing that 2nd rounder still stings, but ah well.

All joking aside about wanting them to not win any more games, I am with you about rooting for them in the playoffs. I'll still always be a Kessel fan, and Pittsburgh can be a pretty fun team to watch.

It does but the Leafs really had their backs against a wall. They were negotiating with really just the Penguins and the alternative was keeping Kessel around in the hopes you could make a better deal in the future. I think that would have been a pretty bad decision and, hey, we still have a 2nd round pick we traded Winnik for so that's something.

How did Kapanen look last night?

Nothing special. But I'd have a hard time saying anything positive about any Leaf last night. I liked his play in his first 4-game stint though.

Don't they need a Detroit regulation loss tomorrow before they can clinch?

EDIT: Er, today.  Whenever Detroit plays next basically.

Whoops, my bad. Pulled a Ray Ferraro. You're right.

Pause the celebration until later tonight everybody.

The pick from the Leafs received from the Penguins in last year's Winnik deal is going back to the Pens as part of the Kessel trade. The Leafs still have their own 2nd and Washington's 2nd for the 2016 draft.

Right and they got the Washington 2nd for...

Winnik.

I was just clarifying for those who may not know that it is not the Leafs own 2nd round pick going to Pittsburgh for the Kessel deal.

We still have Pittsburg's first round pick wherever in the first round that ends up, Correct?

Yup. The condition on that one was the Pens making the playoffs for it to be from this year's draft. Their last 10 games have taken care of that and then some.
