Kessel scores how many?

Nice, so now we have to hope they are the first team out of the first round.  8)

If they get knocked out of the first round, it doesn't matter when. What will matter is where they finish points-wise.

Kessel scored again and Pens are up 5-0 on the Isles.  I...I think they're gonna make it.

Gives Kessel an shot at 30 on the season. He's got 26 with 4 games to go, but he's having one of his hot streaks.

Good for Phil. Im glad for the dude to get hot and get back to playoffs. But time to start losing... Rooting for the penguins for me is now over for the year

I'm totally ok with Phil winning the Conn Smythe.

I believe it's based on points up until the conference finals.  So, the final 4 will pick 27-30, regardless of where they finished in the standings.

The final draft order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoffs. Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the last (30th) overall pick of the draft while the runner up is awarded the 29th. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 27th and 28th overall picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record.

The 26th to 15th spots in the draft are then filled, first by the remaining division winners, then by whichever teams are left. In both situations, the team with the better regular season record will pick later in the draft.

Phil Kessel scores 26 goals with33 assists for 59 total points for the Pens this season.  Far less than anticipated playing with the likes of Crosby and Malkin.  :P

Phil Kessel sells his luxury College Park condo for $3.325 million, $565,000 below the asking price. Oh well, he's overpaid and can absorb the loss!  :-\

I guess his Toronto days are now really behind him, other than for the fact that our Leafs are still paying a portion of his salary! And, his best bud Bozak is still here.  :o

For months, the Phil Kessel experiment in Pittsburgh looked like a dud.

He skated with Sidney Crosby. He shifted to Evgeni Malkin?s wing. But, like a lot of the lineup, he wasn?t scoring. Kessel had 20 points in his first 36 games, and the Penguins were sputtering ? out of a playoff spot and on pace for their worst season in a decade.

Then came the coaching change, and a system change, and more line changes. When Kessel finally landed with Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino out of desperation in mid-March when Malkin went down with an injury, he took off. They all did.

The Penguins are 22-5-0 ever since, including 8-3 in the playoffs after dusting off the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. Kessel, the hero in Game 6?s overtime win, has better than a point a game ? 11 goals and 17 assists ? in that span, putting him fourth in scoring among all players league-wide.

?When Malkin got hurt and we were into real important games to make the playoffs, Phil really stepped up,? Rutherford said.

?He?s as good a playmaker in the game as there is. Everybody views him as a goal scorer ? they judge him on that ? but he has made some great plays at critical times in games all year long. Very important times where he set someone up to score. His playmaking is exceptional.?

[...]

A big part of what?s made the Penguins so hard to handle of late is they?re a matchup nightmare. The Capitals lost the series in six games despite holding Crosby to no goals and two assists. Malkin had only two points.

In other years, that would have been Pittsburgh?s undoing. In this one, Kessel?s line outshone the Capitals second unit and produced half of the goals scored by Penguins forwards in the series.

In that last season, I advocated for playing Kessel on the sheltered scoring line while Winnik/Kadri/Santorelli took the brunt of the top lines where possible, so he could be used like a scalpel in mismatch situations. Nice to see Phil getting the some much deserved accolades with the Pens and a chance to contend for the Cup.

1) I'm all in on Kessel for Conn Smythe

2) I hope this shows how the only thing that really matters come trade time is just elemental economic theory. Pittsburgh was the perfect situation for Kessel. He can be the fourth or fifth banana and be a huge contributor. Pittsburgh's deal was great for them and now it's playing out that way.

But the Leafs had one suitor and had to make the deal they made. I still like the return for the Leafs, it was a fair deal, but there has to be a market for players to get a good return. I really hope some of the "Why should we trade player X? He's good and has a good contract!" folk will absorb that.

Star players typically don't get traded straight up, so I was fine with the haul of quarters on the dollar in the trade.  The only gripe I had was eating 1.2 million for the next 7 years.  I'm glad we managed to not retain any salary on Dion, but  >:( we did with Phil.

Agreed completely on Nik with this post. Kessel had to go, the market was tight and I am super happy for Phil, I really did like the guy.
