Kessel traded to Penguins

Babs would never have tolerated Phil's attitude at all. Good return, may turn out to be great if all goes well.
Now we just need to move the big orange traffic cone and Bozo can go to the desert for a sack of magic beans.

forgot to mention, I loved Phil and his sniper ability, just wasnt going to work out in this situation. Hope he scores 50 plus with Crosby and Malkin

Haven't had time to fully digest this, but the retained salary really hurts. I do like Kapanen though, he adds to a really solid group of forward prospects.

Puts a very official stamp on the rebuild.....

This. For the first time in a decade I have believed everything coming out of the front office, but seeing is believing. Moving Kessel was the definitive proof for me. It's on, and I couldn't be more excited.

I wonder..... is the 2nd rounder that the Leafs gave up in 2016 their own 2nd rounder or the one they owned from the Pens for Winnick?

$1.25M retained hurts for 7 years but Leafs are rebuilding and in no cap issues.  Cap should increase substantially over that time so in effect it's like a buyout hit against the cap which many teams have already.  I think they can deal with it.  Hopefully the prospects can develop, that's the big question.  The first round pick won't be high depending on how the Pens do, but they all count.

One last time:

Toronto acquires 1st round pick, 3rd round pick, Kasperi Kapanen (1st round pick), Scott Harrington (2nd round pick), Nick Spaling

Boston acquires  1st round pick, 2nd round pick, 2nd round pick, Louie Eriksson, Matt Fraser, Zach Phillips (1st round pick), Joseph Morrow (1st round pick), Reilly Smith (3rd round pick)

The dramatics on Twitter by the blogosphere is reaching critical peaks.

links?

twitter.com/mlse basically.

They're looking for a slogan for next year, Rotten for Auston, etc.. They're missing the boat, clown shoes for Matthews all the way...

Choose To Lose for Mathews!

BTW, he's 6'2" and 200 pounds at 17 years old.  Too big for the Leafs.  :P

Pens, I heard it on TSN radio.

bradyfan590: Told firmly by Leafs source - Pouliot was "never, ever" in any deal they could've said "yes" to. Pens weren't making him available, period.

mirtle: The Kessel trade gets worse for the Leafs. The first-round pick is conditional on Penguins making the playoffs.

Pretty meaningless IMO - the odds of that team missing the playoffs is pretty low.

The wording for the 2017 situation is a little weird, does that read that the Leafs only get a 2nd round pick if the Penguins miss the playoffs two years in a row with no pick going back to the Pens?

That's how I read it. I find that fairly improbably though. The first condition makes sense from Pittsburgh's point of view. They're essentially ensuring they don't give away a top 15 pick.

Caps the pick at 16 and possibly worse.

How does expansion work into the draft? Also keep in mind the top three picks this year go into a lottery. God... I wish this rebuild was started by Burke. Last place guarantees less and less these days. I like the management in place but I feel it's unfortunate timing for a rebuild.
