Kessel traded to Penguins

CROSBY: "What did we give up?"

MALKIN: "It doesn't Maatta hahaha!"

I'll miss watching Phil play, and I can't stand the Penguins so this trade kind of stings, but I think it was a good move by the Leafs. I'm content with the direction they're heading.

If Pens miss the playoffs two straight seasons will Kessel really be that effective for them ? If he suddenly drops off this is a huge win for Leafs. If Pens make playoffs as expected we get a first, I think it's fine.

If Kessel's retained ~$2m will only be 1.5% of the cap, his full ride of $8m would've been 6% of the cap. That more or less evacuates the concerns that Kessel's hefty contract -- $8m for an elite scorer beginning to feel his age -- would've posed a problem for the Leafs' cap structure when they were contending.

Except nobody ever made the argument that trading Kessel was primarily about cap concerns. It was just that trying to weigh what they traded Kessel for against Kessel's likely production at 32 or whatever was an incomplete without factoring in the cap savings.

And if the 1.2 million retained is 1.5% of the cap then 8 million would be...ten percent of the cap if my math is right.

What do most quality teams miss?  A pure sniper!  Phil fills the bill and I can imagine that Crosby is salivating to have him on his wing. They should score in huge bunchs, certainly enough to guarantee a playoff berth next year and we get our first. Babcock is thru some of the rot already.
With Bozo gone and the (sorry) Pylon on his way or at least rehabilitated as a true #3 which he is, this is in some ways a sorry sad day and at the same time a great one?.sort of like the ever changing weather and huge Jays win on Canada Day.
The huge question is who will wear the C on opening night?????

This is the thing, these are just the first steps of a new Leafs team that will be ready to really compete in 4-5 years, Kessel will most likely be on the downside of his career by then. I'm excited to see how the picks and prospects turn out.

That's more or less my exact feeling, though I don't mind the Penguins.

Moi aussi.

I don't mind the Pens, Kessel should excel with a real centre and without the spotlight as the team star player but the fact it he did not do that here and would never do that here.

Kessel was always (IMHO) a platinum hood ornament on a Yugo as a Maple Leaf.

Talented, yes, but team leader and a player you can build around, no. Kessel is a pure goal scorer and has a personality better suited to being out of the spotlight.

The carnival that was last season (that "shove it" message to the fans at the end of a game and then mailing it in the last 30 games or so) meant that there was no way he could attend training camp. Spreading that toxicity among the next generation of players in a rebuild was just too great a risk.

Time will tell whether we got enough in return but really, he had to go and that per se is enough as far as I am concerned.

To the extent that it brings to an end the Kessel - Seguin/Hamilton  debate and the Burke era, there is that bonus too. Still, I must say that if anyone had bet me that we would have Kessel longer than the Bruins had Seguin and Hamilton, I would be homeless right now.

Time to look forward, not back.

So...if I'm not mistaken the tear down so far has yielded:

Brandon Leipsic
Travis Dermott
Kaspari Kapanen
Scott Harrington
Nick Spaling
Jeremy Bracco
Martins Dzierkals
Martin Marincin
A 1st rounder
A 3rd rounder
A 5th rounder
A 6th rounder

I'm thinking Nik the 1.2 million retained, could be peddled off in the future years on trades. We might see a lot of that with all the teams.

From Dejan Kovacevic

I?m not remotely worried about any sour or dour attitude.

For one, anything that precedes this happened in Toronto, home of hockey?s most miserable franchise and an equally miserable hockey media and fan base. That environment has put down stronger men than Kessel. You don?t go a half-century without even reaching a Stanley Cup final without something being seriously amiss with the overall setting.

The media there, in particular, is as entitled and self-centered and reckless and vicious as any in North America, and it?s blamed almost entirely by those closest to Kessel for how his disposition is perceived.

Here?s what Tyler Biggs, a forward the Penguins picked up in this trade, told us tonight: ?As far as the rumors go with Phil, that?s a Toronto media thing. They tend to speculate. He?s a great player and a great teammate. I happen to think Pittsburgh is lucky to have him.?

Rutherford was terrific on this: ?I don?t have any concerns. I feel very comfortable getting Phil. I?ve done a lot of homework on this. I?ve talked to a lot of people. And I do believe that getting a fresh start, getting out of Toronto, where he was always under the microscope, always the guy blamed when things weren?t going well. He doesn?t have to be the guy here. We?ve got a bunch of them.?

I gather that Phil gave him words of wisdom while he kept up with the ECHL?

If Ashton plays 15 games for TBay this season - as unlikely as that is - there's a 7th rounder in there, as well.

So...I guess we're rooting for a staph infection in the TB locker room or something.

It would give them 12 picks in the 2016 draft before making any other moves. They could pretty easily go into the draft next summer with 15 or more picks.
