Leafs offer for Bernier.......Or Not!

I'm sure we'd all prefer a proven vet, but if that's not obtainable, I'd much rather go into the season with Reimer+Bernier than Reimer+Scrivens.

That's easy to say before we see what the Leafs are offering though. Either way I'm not fundamentally opposed to the idea but it does seem like the Leafs would be spending some fairly valuable assets and not answering any questions in the process.

Well put, Nik. The rumour today of Frattin and a second makes me shake my head. I have not seen Bernier but I know that i was excited to see Reimer and the Monster prove themselves last season and I got schooled on that. I don't see how a tandem of Reimer and Bernier is much different.

I'm sure others have voiced this, but it comes down to what is going the other way for me. If this is a 2nd + deadweight type deal (Komi/Lombardi, etc), the Leafs could come out ahead. If this is a 2nd + useful player (Kulemin, etc), then I would definitely be opposed to the trade. It isn't a huge/proven upgrade, so I would hope the acquiring cost is low...but I don't see why it would be...

Not to mention Raycroft or Toskala....

How many goalies has he drafted/signed in his time here?

So, because Burke has tried and failed to find the right guy, he should stop trying?

I'd probably say yeah if your approach is to keep acquiring guys who are on the downside of their career/completely unproven as a starter.

What about the not-so-stupid moves? I don't know, I'd be inclined to trust the judgment of any employed scout than you know, some guy (or group of guys) who just likes to chit-chat in a hockey forum.

Pretty much. That's also why all the teams have them as opposed to saying "what are they useful for, we'll just skip this part and save some money"

spenders are going to spend.  If you work in a corporation, then I'm sure you have come across easily replaceable and incompetent people.  They never seem to get fired unless the company hires an outside consultant.  The same thing happens in the hockey world.

Yes, that's because they kiss ass for protection. They also run around asking somebody else to "help" them out, which ends up in somebody else doing their work. Sure, you save money, but in the long run, the shotty work loses you money in other areas.

My guess - Gardiner.

But if it's not, make the deal. Also, no firsts please.

If either of those things happens... done.

But I don't think they will.

Every team wants Gardiner, he the defacto player in all trade negotiations with the Leafs. Burke already said he isn't going anywhere, but he said that about Schenn at one time also, so who knows?

The Lindback trade set the prescient.  The deal won't stray far from that price tag.

If that's the ballpark, what roster player is worth a second and a third? That isn't Gardiner.

Doubtful. Lombardi isn't insane like some other GMs out there. He knows he's not going to get Gardiner, and I doubt he's even asked for him with any degree of seriousness.

MacArthur and a 2nd is literally the only offer I would do. Any other roster player would be either off the table or not appealing to the Kings. I acknowledge that it's an overpayment, but it also makes room for Kadri so that's a factor for me. I'd try to get Kyle Clifford thrown in as well too though.
