Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

The Toronto Marlies are headed to the Calder Cup playoffs. They beat Milwaukee 3-2 in 3on3 OT after tying the game late in the 3rd period.  Nylander put the winner on a plate for Milkkelson after a great burst of speed outside to inside.

The Marlies can still finish as high as 6th in the conference if they win both of their final games (including a game against Chicago who are currently in 7th).  They would also need Oklahoma to lose their final game.

And how about William Nylander.

Toronto Marlies before Nylander: 17-16-6  (.513 PT%)
Toronto Marlies with Nylander: 21-11-3    (.643 PT%)

May also have something to do with the addition of Leipsic as well

Not really, he was ice cold until very recently.

Thanks for the updates WIGWAL...it's something that you're the one updating us on the Marlies playoff run, and you're likely one of the people that's the furthest away from Toronto around here.

Appreciate it...say hi to Mrs. WIGWAL for me.

No problem chief, I've enjoyed following them this season, it's been a welcome distraction from the train wreck that is the big club. Having the ability to stream their games this year has helped.

Mrs WIGWAL said to let you know she is due in about 5 weeks, was wondering if you are gonna be there?

I'm very aware, as you know.

Best of luck to you both, and again, I encourage you to communicate through my counsel.  As instructed in the cease and desist orders, please have her stop with the pictures.

Nylander with a pair of points in the Marlies 3-1 tonight. That's 8 points in his last 4 games. 14 points in his last 10 games.

And the Marlies are now on a 6-game winning streak.

Your counsel is invaluable sir.

Awkward confession time, those pictures are of Skippy during his "dress-up" days.

I guess you didn't hear Don Cherry tonight, because it turns out the Leafs still screwed up by taking Nylander over Ritchie.

I'm assuming he's referring to his playoffs (19 points in 8 games).  I'm sure he also ignored his 62 points in 48 games during the regular season.  But I guess 44th in OHL scoring is a pretty strong argument for Nylander = the suck.

Its time for Don to be put out to pasture, he has done his bit, loved him for a long time, but now he is like a cranky inflexible old man, not the cranky inflexible young man he once was.

Marlies have clinched the playoff spot. What remains to be decided on the final day of the season is who they will face. The Marlies face the Chicago Wolves today. Both teams are tied on 87 points. A Marlies win means they finish 7th and will face the Grand Rapids Griffins. Otherwise they finish 8th and open with the Utica Comets.

Marlies regular season:
Grand Rapids - 1 win 3 loss (2 horrible blowout losses)
Utica - 3 wins 4 losses

Losing might not be the worst thing to happen today.

He's showing an 18.6 SH% YTD...not likely sustainable, but he certainly didn't take long to figure out how to be effective on the smaller rink.

I still think he spends another year with the Marlies, but I'm looking forward to see what he can do in the playoffs.

Ritchie's been great lately, but he also joined a powerhouse team.  It's hardly an 18 year old putting up points in a men's pro league on a team that isn't a powerhouse.

I don't know if any work has really been done on this, but I would expect that young NHL-ready players playing in the AHL would regularly have a pretty high shooting percentage. It would make sense, a guy with a NHL shot shooting on a AHL goalie.

Looking at a few like that. Toffoli shot 15.7% in his first season in the AHL. Then he shot 23.8 in 18 games last season before being called up the NHL. Tanner Pearson shot 13.7% in 2 seasons. Nyquist shot 14.5% in 2 and a quarter seasons. Teemu Pulkkinen, Detroit's next Gustav Nyquist, has shot 16.6% in 2 seasons. Tyler Johnson shot 13.9% in his first AHL season, and then 19.4% in his 2nd season. He was in the NHL the next scoring 50 points.

So I'm not sure we should be as skeptical about Nylander's high shooting percentage as we would be if someone had the number in the NHL.
