Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

The Marlies finished 7th in their conference and will face the Grand Rapid Griffins. They finished the regular season on a 7-game winning streak. The Griffins were 7-3 in their last 10. Some good news: their best player, Teemu Pulkkinen, is currently up with the Red Wings. The bad news: Pulkkinen could be made available again later in the series if the Wings get eliminated in the 1st round. Either way, here's their first round playoff schedule:

that format looks even stranger for a best of five with the first two games being at the lower seed's venue.  Like if either team won the first three games the lower seeded team would get more ticket sales.

I'm pretty sure in the first round the higher seed has the choice of either that format or taking the first 2 home games and doing a 2-2-1 format. I think most go the 2-3 way.

That happened with the Leafs against Vancouver in 94.  Leafs were the higher seed with 98 points, Vancouver was a game over .500, and Toronto (by their choice to minimize travel, if I recall correctly) got games 1, 2, 6, and 7 in Toronto.  The series was over in 5 games, 3 of which were played in Vancouver.

So regarding Nylander, as an 18 year old with 30+ games played he's producing the 2nd best numbers of anyone in the past 20 years.

Comparing his performance to 19 year olds in the AHL only Bergeron (marginal) Demitra and Spezza have ever out performed him.

I wonder if they have him centre the top line in the AHL next year and see if he can dominate.

As a 19 year old, he has the potential to put up upwards of a PPG in the AHL, that would be good for his development and confidence I think.

Don Cherry can wax lyrical all he wants, I'm surprised more people in the Toronto media are not talking about this guys performance as an 18 year old in the AHL.

The Toronto media doesn't do that.  They don't want to talk about positives around the Leafs.  Far more enjoyable to make insinuating statements and see if Kessel gets angry.

Not that it matters much to me as I'm so far away but has there been any talk of hosting the Marlies playoff games at the Air Canada Centre? Might be nice to have some playoff hockey there and its available.

Good question and will they be televised? None of the recent games have been on Rogers and I am out in Collingwood. Any info on this?

On Leafs Lunch Nylander says he's up to 189 lbs.

I've noticed that the past month or so, he still doesn't look jacked up top either, so probably close to another 10 pounds to add there.

Right now he reminds me quite a bit of Reilly in the physique department, seems most of his strength comes from his lower body and core.

Bad news for the Marlies.  Detroit sent Teemu Pulkkinen back to the AHL so he will play in Game 1 of the AHL series.

i don't know ..i'd rather the marlies get deep because they're playing well ..not because the other team doesn't have their best players.  At one point they were dead last I'd say they've already achieved a certain level of success this season just by making it.

More games is never a bad thing.  They are already playing a very good team in Grand Rapids so it's not like it would have been a cheap win to beat them without Pulkkinen.
