Mitch Marner: what now?

So IF Marner were to sign an offer sheet and leave, how would he be received when that team comes to Toronto for the first time? Would it be like Tavares on Long Island? Do Leaf fans have it in them to behave that way?

As for the question of why fans care...my opinion, once you start talking about earning 8 or 9 million a year, the extra 2-4 really makes no difference in your life. You and your kids will be set for life and will never have to worry about money. But that extra 2-4 million tacked onto a few contracts (Matthews and potentially Marner) can really have a negative impact on the ability of management to put together a strong supporting cast. I don't think it's very likely that a team that consists of Tavares/Matthews/Marner/Nylander and a scrub defense is going to win a Cup, unless ALL the breaks go their way one year.

Fans are actually upset with Marner over this?

In today's day and age a minority can be very loud. I see the hate bubbling on Twitter. I doubt it's a large group, and I doubt the members of that group are frequently accused of being reasonable.

I doubt these fans really think Marner should be loyal to Dubas and the Maple Leafs too. I suspect they feel he should be loyal to them as fans somehow. Maybe they aren't even fully aware of that.

If he does leave, I really hope there isn't a Leaf fan video as embarrassing at that Ises video about Tavares. It would be less embarrassing to walk down Younge street naked on a cold day.

I just don't get it.  This is how negotiations go.  He saw how the Nylander and Matthews negotiations played out and now he wants his own.  And deservedly so.  Don't understand why Marner of all players should be made the example of at this point or be the target of dislike from the fans.

If he entertains offers from other teams, so be it.  That's a tool players can use and i don't see why more players don't use it (provided there are willing teams to engage).

The differences were pretty clearly laid out. Neither Nylander or Matthews sought out or entertained offer sheets. And the amount of negotiating through the media for Nylander and Matthews combined doesn't even come close to what we've seen with Marner in just the last few weeks. Matthews' in particular was pretty much kept entirely under wraps until it was announced. Maybe it doesn't bother you, and that's fine, but these are nowhere close to being the same kinds of negotiations.

Friedman is saying Leafs offered a short term 2 x $8M deal so Marner can go back to the well in year 3 when presumably there's a new TV deal and the cap is higher.

I wonder if he's even doing anything tons of other RFAs haven't done over the years.  Other than letting it be known he's going to use his rights as best he can publically.

If Marner was the 30th guy to openly admit to investigating options, it would be fine. But he's the first or second.

It's scary I guess. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate... and we know how that turned out.

And he's got 3 RFA years left? That's an interesting deal.

It would make for another interesting summer in 2021 since the Leafs currently have 4 forwards,2 defencemen and 0 goalies signed in that year.  :D

Doesn't bother me.

But as I suggested previously with the other negotiations, I wasn't fond of how those other negotiations went or ended.  So I'm not going to bum on Marner for something like an entertained offer sheet.  And is he even negotiating through the media?  Sounds like the media is pumping this whole thing more than anyone else.

From a Leafs perspective,  I would rather cave and go 8 x $11 or even as high as 8 x $12.

My guess is after 2 years he'll be asking for $13-14M + per year on a long term deal.  We will need the cap space in those prime contending years.

I believe he said that they may offer him that, not that they have. So it seemed speculative.

Dreger's literally giving us a play-by-play here. More than we've seen from other negotiations. He's not getting the info from Dubas, and it's incredibly unlikely he's making things up. So that leaves only one possibility.

That makes sense...no way a 2 year deal makes sense for the Leafs, other than punting the problem down the road.

Yeah, I heard him on the radio. He's just thinking out loud, not insider info on the 2-year deal. I don't think anyone would be interested in that, the contract talk wouldn't stop. I doubt Mitch or anyone involved wants to keep this story going. His speculation on Nylander was way off, stick to the insider info and spare us your opinions/speculation.

I think that's purely speculation on his part - that it's something they might be considering as a plan if they can't get something longer done, etc. Not that it has actually been offered at this point.

I just want a contract signed, any contract just so I can quit reading up about Marner's contract demands and move on to seeing how the Leafs improve their team.

Don't get me started on Dreger, who I think is an absolute blowhard.

I said before I'd do a 3-year deal at $8mil. I don't know about 2 years though. Seems like a small difference but that's a full extra Cup run.

He said on the radio every tweet he posts is 100% facts?
