Neither Abid nor Armstrong are on that list.

Igor Korolev and Alexander Karpovtsev (assistant coaches) are on that list though.

Riley Armstrong posted on Twitter yesterday that he was attending the St. John's IceCaps training camp. I don't think he was playing in the KHL.

Hopefully that is true.

President Dmitry Medvedev has announced plans to take aging Soviet-built planes out of service starting next year. The short- and medium-range Yak-42 has been in service since 1980 and dozens are still in service with Russian and other airlines.

My goodness. They were in a plane that is due to be taken out of commission in a few months? Unbelievable.

Taken from the CNN report:

"An aviation agency spokesman, Sergei Izvolsky, told CNN the crash occurred around 4 p.m. (8 a.m. ET) during take-off because the plane couldn't reach a safe altitude fast enough.

The aircraft collided with the antenna of the airport beacon, fell to the ground and broke into several pieces and caught fire, Izvolsky said."

Karpovtsev and Korolev too? That is just tragic and sad. I don't really know what to say or where to begin.

Sounds like a weight & balance issue to me. I'm guessing the plane was either overloaded with fuel or cargo or the calculations were off on the the proper trim for take-off... or a combination of both.

That is horrible, can't believe this happened, hate to say it, but another reason for players to stay away from the KHL, because of the lack of safety with the Airlines in Russia.

Not necessarily. This particular plane was produced as recently as '02 so it may not have been soviet built. It may have been something that could have happened anywhere.

Lokomotiv forward Alexander Galimov survived the crash, his agent confirmed to Sovetsky Sport.

Emergencies Ministry reported there were 42 people onboard. Two of them survived the crash.

Details obviously still coming in but according to another report, Galimov is the only player still alive along with one crew member.

Horrible.

Ruslan Salei is reported to be alive, awaiting the team in Minsk as per Slava Malamud.

Another Russian reporter, Dmitry Chesnokov (from Puck Daddy) says opposite, that Salei was on the plane.
