Schenn's Next deal

Hes getting paid on potential. He has to live up to the contract now, even though he clearly regressed last year. Improvement isnt always a guarantee. Plus Buffalo is $3m over the cap.

A contract extension wouldn't effect his cap hit this season, which is still $1.3mil.

I'd just like to draw attention to the fact that Kyper was wrong on the Bogo deal. Don't know how long ago it was when I  made comments about Kyper being generally unreliable...but I think I still stand by it.

What did Kyper report?

5.7 instead of 5.0.

I just watched Sportsline on CHCH and they're saying the Schenn contract is going to be 5mil per year for 4 years. Sure hope they are wrong. I like Schenn but 5 mil is too much.

No one else seems to be reporting that and CHCH isn't exactly the most reliable of sources for breaking news.

5 mil would be an overpayment. I hope he doesn't get hurt. Komi was never the same after his shoulder operation.

At 5 mil I would *look* at my trade options.

If 5 mil. per year doesn't buy at least 3 UFA years then yeah, it's quite the overpayment.

5 million per year should buy the rest of his career. With Luke's limited offensive potential I don't see ever being worth more than that. Not counting inflation.

Doughty is worth what, 10 million per?

Yeah, that's kind of to my point. If Doughty = Stamkos (contract wise... and I think that's fair) Shouldn't Schenn (relatively speaking) = van Riemsdyk? 4.25 is the most sane number I can can come up with.

An equation I am very comfortable with is Schenn < Couture.  Couture got 2.875 on a 2-year deal, though I think that is a substantial underpayment for a 22 year old 30 goal scorer.

I would certainly rather see Schenn sign for a 1-year deal than sign him to a 5-million/year deal.  I'd also rather sign him right up to his UFA year for something reasonable than pay 5 million and eat up UFA years.  Where would that rank him league-wide in salaries among non-UFA defensemen?

Luke is a young defenseman who plays a lot.  But how good is he really league wide?  I just don't believe hits or blocked shots characterizes overall defensive ability very closely at all so i'm not willing to buy those stats as an argument for his defensive abilities.  None of the advanced stats i have seen suggest that Luke is all that great defensively.  Non-advanced stats (like the much maligned +/-) suggest he had a defensive dip after kabby left despite the team's win streak.  I just don't have any evidence that I can point to to suggest he is really all that great at defense yet relative to top defenders league-wide.  It is impossible for me to say much by watching because I just don't watch other top defensemen with the same regularity or focus....

Calm down folks, it's CHCH.

Seriously. If there was even a hint of truth to this, someone else would have reported it by now.

Didn't they start a Kafuffle like this a couple of years ago with something? I don't remember what it was, but I remember it being wrong and negative.

Luke's deal should be worth between 3 and 4 million a year. Less than 3 and it's a bargain. More than 4 and Burke has overpaid. (IMHO)

So 3+ if his deal keeps him a RFA and 4+ if it buys UFA years. That's pretty much what I gather that would make folks happy.
