Schenn's Next deal

3.75 - 4.25 mil. on a long term deal and I'd be delighted. 4.25-4.75 mil. and I'd still be comfortable if the term is there. North of that? I'm not so sure.

I think the deal will come in between 3.75-4.25

I think it would depend on how long term the deal is. If they end up buying a couple of UFA years I'm happy with giving him more right now.

Just not quite happy with the situation. Both sides have just been paying lip service that they're optimistic something will get done. If that's the case why isn't it done yet?
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There are any number of reasons why a deal might not be done yet, not the least of which is that there's no reason for it to be done yet.

Seriously. We know nothing about whatever negotiations may have gone on. There's absolutely no reason to have an opinion on Schenn's contract or lack thereof right now.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be uneasy. Schenn will likely get signed, but it is in a more dramatic fashion than I am used to. It's pretty normal to want one of your best players locked up. If being unsigned means he doesn't take part in training camp then that is far from ideal. Training camp is, what, only a week away? If another couple of weeks go by then missing the beginning of the regular season is a real possibility. Granted, it is still premature to think about the regular season, but at the very least, training camp being a week away with Schenn unsigned is concerning.

If Schenn gets say 4 - 4.75 mil per, then Doughty is worth 7-8/per by that reasoning. Just ludicrous and I would wonder what Burke is doing.

I think you should get ready to be disappointed by this contract.

Well, I think Doughty is worth every penny Stamkos got so...

wow 2.75-3.25 is really good for schenn, would have taken him at least 4 million.  I wonder why it is taking so long if that is how much they are signing schenn for.

I don't know where Luke will end up contract-wise but I don't believe hoping for a sub-3 million contract on a short-term deal is a ludicrous position to take. Take Logan Couture as a comparable.  He just signed a $2.875 per year, 2-year deal.  He is 22 and in a similar contractual situation as Luke.  He was a Calder finalist, and tied for 14th in the league in goals last year.  I don't know where to find average icetime, but scanning his playoff icetimes he typically had between 17 and 21 minutes per game -- 1st or 2nd line ice time.  He was one of the best offensive players on a good offensive team.  Luke was one of the best defensive players on a bad defensive team.  Goal scorers typically get paid more than defensive defensemen.  I'd say there are quite a number or reasons to expect Couture to be paid more than Luke on a deal with similar term... I don't know whether that will happen or not.

There are no UFA years bought in Couture's deal though. If the Schenn deal keeps him a RFA at the end of term, it would naturally be low like that too, no?

Karl Alzner is an even better comparable, but like Couture he only signed for 2 years.

... That's what I'm trying to say. It wouldn't be surprising for Schenn to sign a 2-year deal.  Many players have a 2-year second deal.  If Schenn does sign such a deal, seeing it come in under 3 million would not seem out of whack with the marketplace.  I'm just pointing this out because I got the impression that some people seem to think that having Schenn sign for under 3, even on a short-term contract, is completely unrealistic.

There was some speculation on HF Boards by a Kings fan who said that Doughty has turned down both a short term and a long term deal.  He speculated that the agent was trying to get Doughty signed up to UFA - no more, no less.  He further speculated that this was the reason for all these RFA's under this agency not being signed - a term issue, not money.

It's all speculation, but an interesting thought.  Anyone care to question the validity of this notion?  Do you think an agency would do this?

It really shouldn't be. If there's a deadline to sign a deal where before it hits there's absolutely no reason in the world that something needs to be signed, oftentimes negotiations will go right to that deadline. Provided that Burke's current offer, whatever it is, still stands right before camp then Schenn can wait to actually show up to sign that day and the whole process will take the length of a pen stroke.

If there were reports about things not going well or Schenn wanting a crazy amount of money then yeah, that would be troubling but the opposite is true. Both sides say they think something will get done.

Like I said. Until something actually happens there's no real reason to fret over it.

I see something 3.25-3.5 year for five with bonus's

Can not See BB getting tied up on salary cap with possible bonus problems. Will be straight salary

And if they think they are going to hold him hostage for a big contract there wrong. Burke hate players playing hardball.
