Tournament Starts Today

I don't see why American's are crapping on American's... Hull, Modano, and Roenick. Does it really accomplish anything? It's a really ugly thing to do.

Have you not been following this election cycle?  ;D

Canadian D are superior, period. That has been very clear at the last handful of NHL caliber international tournaments. Most teams have decent forwards but Canada's D is amazing.

I think back to the Olympics and how the Canadian media and spectators are so sympathetic to Canadian under achievers. Although disappointed, we don't shit on them, we support them.

Did we crap on Team Canada after the Turin olympics? I honestly can't remember.

We definitely gave them a ton of heat for it, yeah. Especially when their bad roster decisions came back to bite them in exactly the way people thought it would.

I get where you're coming from, and I totally agree with your sentiments. I just wanted to highlight for you that Americans crapping on one another is bordering on being a national pastime. While unproductive and mean, and they do it for something as serious as national leadership, it shouldn't surprise you when they do it for sport.

What surprises me is that they get so angry about this, and not about actual real life problems, but that's for another thread.

I think the problem is that other countries don't have complete teams.  The D on Sweden is amazing, but their forwards are so-so.  The forwards on Russia are out of this world, but they have no D.  I think Finland is moving towards having a dominate team in the next couple of years.

If only they had thought of a way for the nations to combine their players to come up with a more complete team in this tournament.

The defencemen that Canada DIDN'T have playing last night (included injured and scratched players) would still probably be the 2nd best group in the tournament:

Keith-Letang
Muzzin-Subban
Brodie-Giordano

Sweden would obviously be the only group that comes close, but if I'm allowed to use Keith/Muzzin for this I'd give Canada B the edge. Heck, that might even be better than what Canada DID have depending on who you talk to.

I was thinking this over the weekend as well. Team Swussia would be pretty boss.

Don't give Putin any ideas.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Draper-Bertuzzi over Crosby and Staal but either way. Keep in mind McCabe was an injury replacement.

Greg Wyshynski ‏@wyshynski
David Backes said it's disappointing that former USA players were critical on social media last night. "Distasteful and aggravating"

I'm sure that Americans watching the game last night would probably describe that experience the same way.

Eh, you know, I love Phil and think the fact that he's been unfairly dumped on for so much of his career buys him a little leeway but let's be real, if Mark Messier had done the same thing after Nagano or something we'd all have thought it was a jerk move.

Well I'm not entirely sure that's true or if it's even relevant to something happening today, but my main issue with Backes getting upset here is that he's acting like Phil was personally calling out the players on the team. I think it's pretty clear if Phil has an issue with someone it's with someone a lot higher in USA Hockey than David Backes. More from him here too:

Stephen Whyno ‏@SWhyno
Backes said tweets "don?t get lost in the fray and those comments are there and have been read and I think will be remembered."

Evan Sporer ‏@ev_sporer  7 minutes ago
Zach Parise said it doesn?t bother him what people say on social media.

Evan Sporer ‏@ev_sporer  6 minutes ago
Parise: ?Didn't Phil have surgery? I don't think he could even play, anyway. His tweet didn't really make sense. ?

Yeah, it definitely bothered him.

This is what makes this even funnier too:

Adam Herman ‏@AdamZHerman
"We're going to build a team that is gritty and tough and strong-minded."

*Gets upset at a Phil Kessel joke*

I don't think that what Backes said was limited to Phil but also included guys like Hull and Roenick who don't have the same beef with USA hockey Phil does.

In the specific case of Kessel though while I agree he has that legitimate beef with USA hockey I also see how the actual guys on the team are getting beat up on and that even if Kessel's tweet wasn't aimed at them it is part of the pile-on.

Well regardless there's one NHLer who didn't seem to have a problem with it:
