Wilson fired, Randy Carlyle takes over

I was all for bringing Eakins up as an interim coach, at the least, to see how he does. Bustaheims made a good point which Burke echoed in the presser today that getting those kids on the Marlies as far into the playoffs as possible is vital experience in knowing what it takes to win. I think it's better that Dallas stays where he is for now.

Also, Eakins is a great AHL coach with the younger players but so was Paul Maurice when everybody wanted him to be the next Leaf coach. Things didn't work out so well when Paul came up.

I like what I saw from Carlyle in the press conference and if Burke was looking for a long term coach then he couldn't really go with Eakins who's unproven at the NHL level. I'm hoping Carlyle will light a fire under everyone's ass but I hope his style of coaching doesn't backfire as well.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Thank god this day has come. Finally we'll see how good some of our guys are and how bad some are.

Wilson being let go made me so happy i wanted to do this

Lets put two tears in a bucket, kick it and say eff it.

Time to move forward and put some pride back in this team. Randy is just the man for the job imho. He's a ass kicker and god knows we need one of those, a couple of years ago would have been nicer but hell at least we got him.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

I think i spend to much time reading. Just win tonight.
Next it's Boston then Pittsburgh.

Just win.
Carlyle is not a savior just a stopgap.

So, this is the first time the Leafs have a coach who had previously won a Stanley Cup as coach since Punch Imlach in 1980.

Leafs last cup win 67. It's not the coach that wins but the players.

True but having a great coach helps. Look at the last 2 good Leafs coaches , Burns and Quinn both got Leafs teams to conference finals.

I thought that with Wilson, so did Burke.
It's the product on the ice that determines who go's and stays.
Coaching is a stop gap measure cause the players tuned you out.
Carlyle will suffer the same fate i'm afraid, but i'll stay tuned for the drama.

I loved that the fired wilson.  I think for entertainment value they should have had Wilson at the press conference.  I can only imagine what caustic remarks he might have made.

Wilson managed to stay almost 4 years, Burke will ship players out who won't play for Carlyle. He'll have players he wants, these 18 games will go a long way to determining who stays and who goes for next season.

Yeah but MLSE is already on the hook to pay one coach for a year that he isn't going to be coaching. I don't think they're just going to fire Carlyle and pay him to sit at home too. Randy's here for awhile whether you like it or not.

Any chance Ron Wilson stays on and scouts a few games, or helps out in some way?  I was just reading that Randy Carlyle was doing something similar for the Ducks after they fired him.  It might be good to have someone that knows the players well to offer some insight, if asked.

The thing with Carlyle is his coaching style is going the way of the do-do bird...

Say what now?

Yeah I don't understand this at all. I think "Carlyle's style" of coaching is actually more important than ever in today's game. So many teams are well coached and play within a defensive system that if you don't have a solid system in place you'll spin your wheels.  They said the same things about Hitchcock too and his team is battling for #1 overall.

I am dumbfounded why people want Eakins so quickly. Because he's a nice guy? Because as I recall, he hasn't coached for that long, and doesn't have a heck of a lot to go on based on his rcord. I don't think the organization is stupid enough to let him walk. Like CW said they can offer him another role if he really wants it.
By all accounts the players rave about him, and having a coach that players want to play for is huge.. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as an assistant with the big club.

Eakins says he'd prefer to be an AHL coach than a NHL assistant.

In terms of the raving, I take it with a bit of a grain of salt because who gets called up is significantly influenced by who Eakins says should get called up. Maurice & others received similar accolades. Having said that, I'm sure some of it is genuine. He does seem like a pretty good guy.

As I said before Burke said it yesterday, how do you promote an AHL coach to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs, over all the other qualified candidates out there, who has never won anything as a coach nor even coached a team in any role to a single playoff game? This is his third season as a head coach of any team ever and his 6th season in any hockey coaching role. To me, that's a heck of a stretch just because a few AHL players have voiced liking him when some of them may be motivated to doing so because it may help them get a call up.

Comparing Eakins resume to Carlyle (Cup winner), Crawford (Cup winner), Kennan (Cup winner), Scott Gordon (11 years as a head coach in the ECHL, AHL & NHL plus years as an assistant & USA Hockey), Greg Cronin (8 years as a head coach on AHL & NCAA plus years as an assistant in various leagues including the NHL & USA Hockey), etc, etc, it strikes me as darn near no contest right now.

Let's see how Dallas does in the AHL playoffs with the Marlies. If he gets knocked out in the first round with that club - who may be the best Leafs AHL roster ever, his stock will plummet. If he does well, his time will come soon enough. To throw him into the head coach job of this Leafs team and the crazy media situation right now is a heck of a reach when one considers all the other candidates objectively.
