Wilson fired, Randy Carlyle takes over

Still listening on TSN Radio and I kinda agree with Simmons that the move is almost Martin Gerber like. Leafs will most likely mount a push and end up 9th, 10th, 11th. Out of the playoffs and no top 5 pick either.

There's next to no parallel to Martin Gerber in this case. The only parallel is the issue of their record. Other than that Carlyle isn't a stopgap, last ditch effort to make the playoffs. It's a complete change in coaching and coaching philosophy, and will have a lasting effect.

If only this could have happened with 30 games left the Leafs would have been in great shape going forward into the playoffs.

Leave it to the media to already kill enthusiasm.

I don't blame him for that. I think the media will try to play up the drama between Lupul and Carlyle but he admitted he was wrong in the situation and Carlyle is going to have to make amends with Lupul, he would be crazy not too.  The only issue will be Lupul sucking it up and forgiving Carlyle.

For Lupul and Carlyle.... I don't think it will be nearly as dramatic as any of this.

Well TBH I think it was a logical choice for Burke, and I'm surprised people are surprised. He won a Cup with him in Anaheim, that's gotta count for something.

Lupul didn't get as much ice time under Carlyle because Carlyle had other options ahead of him and Lupul wasn't playing like he is now. On the Leafs there are no better wingers than Lupul or Kessel.

Right, all I'm saying is that the drama that the media creates, is never as such with the professionals involved. I'm sure this is nothing for the two and won't be an issue at all. The media wants you to believe that Lupul will now divide the dressing room and not listen to Carlyle for the entirety of his stay there, until he is ultimately traded because of it.

Yeah I know. I'm sure Carlyle would have spoken to Lupul immediately and admit he was wrong about him on the left wing. He's said as much in the press even before getting hired here.

In fact, he said it again in this AM's presser.  He also said it's water under the bridge.

(Carlyle + Lupul) x 2 = 0.

Well TBH I think it was a logical choice for Burke, and I'm surprised people are surprised. He won a Cup with him in Anaheim, that's gotta count for something.

Have you seen Anaheim's record since they fired him?

Obviously Burke still thinks the Leafs have to make the playoffs - I wonder if he's starting to feel some heat from his superiors?

Yeah, but wouldn't we run out of coaches? Every coach has a shelf life, and most coaches go through a stretch with a losing record and get fired. Many get rehired and find success elsewhere.

Is there any coach available right now that didn't have a winning record at some point?

Carlyle has a better winning percentage as a coach than Wilson. :D

I posted a while back about Wilson's coaching record. Burke praises his ex-coach about his record saying he's one of the all time leaders in wins etc. Well not hard to do that when you've coached the amount of games he's had. As much as I've bashed Wilson I have always said and believed that a coach is only as good as his players. If you have a crappy team in front of you, you basically have to be a miracle worker. What a coach can do is bring in a system that works and also motivation. Getting players to bring it every day is probably the hardest thing for a coach but it has to be done.
I give Wilson the benefit of the doubt. Burke and Wilson inherited a crappy team. The time has passed and although I see some signs of improved talent, youth etc the problems that needed to be fixed when they took over are still there. Poor PK. Poor G.A.A. PP I still have my doubts and overall team defense which as far as I'm concerned is horrendous. None of these areas of the game have really improved. If all or some would have we wouldn't be talking about Wilson's firing. An improvement in these areas would have lead to more wins which ultimately would have saved Ron's job. This is where he has failed. Hopefully Randy can change some of that.

Although it's been speculated that Kulemin has been in the dumps due to stuff like the plane crash that claimed Korolev from us.  Maybe it's been Wilson?  How many other players might be feeling the same?  Really hope Carlyle lifts the player's spirits and makes this a team that plays good defense and uses their speed to capitalize on opposition's mistakes.

So you see the move of as a "must win now" move too? What about Eakins? The thing with Carlyle is his coaching style is going the way of the do-do bird...

Well to be honest, his record is pretty good. He had, what, one losing season? I'll reserve judgment for later, but why not let Eakins develop our players? It seems like everyone says he's good at that (besides the doublespeak impatience when our prospects don't play up to expectations... Nazem Kadri? Har har) Besides, Eakins is still green. I don't know why people view him as some kind of coaching vet with an impeccable track record.

Actually... that sounds more like Carlyle!

Yeah, that is just the media stirring the pot IMO. They need to stop this crap, I hate it, sometimes I do think they create unnecessary angst.

SOMETIMES? I don't fault Burke et al for their feelings towards the TO media. Most of them are shoddy muckrakers who twist words and situations around and insert personal issues into their work. If Toronto ever had an enema they'd only have 2-3 press guys left. It's not a good situation when bloggers are the better writers - and by that I do not mean to insult bloggers at all. It's when you have the (I assume) highly paid guys as they are and the guys with no axes to grind writing IMO the balanced articles. the bloggers should make the money....!

I mean, honestly, where is the journalistic integrity here? I severely doubt that Burke would bring in Carlyle to the chagrin of one of his best players. Carlyle has apologized time and time again and took responsibility for his error with Lupul. I can't imagine Lupul still holds a grudge.
