2016 Lead up to the Trade Deadline thread

What's causing it though?  Are we actually seeing a shift in how NHL teams conduct themselves, or is this just a blip?

I think a lot of teams that wanted to make moves made them early. Florida and Chicago were always the two teams in my mind that were most likely to acquire depth, and they basically traded for everyone.

Yeah but in years past that would have tipped off an arms race.  This year its like the GM's are saying "Well either Chicago or Washington is going to win it, so why try?"

Seems like Leafs were smart to start dealing UFA's well before the deadline.

some of these tweets I'm seeing make me laugh though.  I haven't watched any of the tv but I know the whole "so and so is done...BUT you never know what can happen over the next 20 minutes"

they are BEGGING people to pay attention and are being made to look silly this year because of less than 10 trades so far.

tsn radio is basically talking about how rediculous their own coverage is.

Yup. I actually forgot about the Matthias for a 4th trade for a second. I don't think that materializes if they waited until today. On the other hand it's possible they waited too long on PAP, but if no ones interested then no ones interested.

Agreed.

Makes me appreciate the return on the Polak deal a little more.

Maybe. But it's not like other teams haven't made moves. Pittsburgh has tinkered, adding pieces. The Rangers made a pretty solid move.

The teams that are a surprise to me right now are the Islanders, Predators, Wild and Lightning. The thing though is that I think there's a real interest in real pieces but does adding a Boyes or a Grabner for a 5th or 6th do anything for you? I think there very well may be a shift in that regard.

Which is where a guy like Komarov in my mind would have value.  Here's a guy you could sell to teams as a playoff warrior that can play anywhere in your lineup.  I would have thought that maybe one of the teams that needed some help up front might take a swing at someone like him.  Or maybe someone like Gardiner.

It could be that the Leafs aren't interested in trading those guys, but it still seems weird that more hasn't happened today.

Currently six trades so far on deadline day. Last such day with this little activity was 1999-2000 when only 12 trades were made.

Wow. Even if a few trickle in there's almost no way they reach 12.

You know what makes for good deadline day TV? The third discussion of the day about Alex Galchenyuk's preferred position.

So how long after the deadline is the latest we'd hear about a trade? Guessing that as long as the paperwork is lodged before 3pm they could be announced anytime today?

I think in years past it was all pretty much announced by 4:15 or so.

How much of that is a logjam created by everyone trying to get their trades done though?  With today going the way it's going, I would have to think that there is absolutely nothing holding things up.

Agreed, except as somebody posted teams might be hushing up til the last minute as a strategic thingy.  Kind of like Babs talking into his deli takeout menu all the time behind the bench.

If were done, I can't complain about the haul. I will be surprised that we couldn't get anything for Paranteau.

I think it looks that way.  Lots of reports coming in that certain players were not moved.  Hamhuis, Erickson, and Hartnell were not moved.  Detroit did not make a move today.

All of you advanced stats guys: what is TSN's TR60 (Trades Reported per 60 minutes) today so far?

It can take a couple hours. Usually, most deals are out there by aroudn 4 or so.

It wouldnt' surprise me if there were a few Leaf trades in the queue right now. Nothing major, but I can't imagine none of the pending UFAs were moved.
