2017-2018 NHL Thread

I'm generally more ambivalent than most on Gary Bettman and his impact on the game but I really don't understand inducting him while he's still commissioner. It seems like you're not even interested in an actual reflection on the entirety of his impact on the game.

I agree wholeheartedly.  "Why now?" is what came to mind.

It'd be hard to NOT put him in the HHOF just considering how long he's held the role of commissioner for, but to do it now and not when he retires? That's just a head-scratcher.

He's been a lock for the HOF for years.

But yes, "why now?"

To me the whole thing about putting him in or not would just be a reflection on the fact that they put in people like Hefford and Yakushev. Whenever people ask why they do that it's "Well, it's not the NHL Hall of Fame".

I get why he'd be in a NHL HOF and I get that the HHOF serves as a de facto NHL HOF but strictly on those terms I think the debate has to be on his impact on "the game" which is somewhat more questionable.

Maybe he's known to be stepping down?

I'm pretty sure he's already said he's going to be stepping down when his current contract is up but that's not for a while now.

Look it, I don't know anything, but maybe he doesn't want to be the face of the owners in the next CBA negotiation...let the new guy handle that as his first big assignment.

So I don't know how valid this is but one of John Shannon's tweets from today seemed to suggest Wickenheiser was eligible but somehow didn't get in. Can that be true? Because that seems like a pretty crazy omission.

There was some talk amongst the media that the selection comittee or whoever can decide this should consider waiving the waiting period for her:

http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/top-10-candidates-for-the-hall-of-fame-class-of-2018

2. Hayley Wickenheiser (waiting period waived)

The last player to jump directly to the Hall of Fame with an exemption from the mandatory waiting period was Wayne Gretzky in 1999. Now that the Hall honors female inductees, it should subject female players to all the same rules ? and unwritten rules ? as the men, and that means it should be fair game to consider immediate induction for a deserving woman. And nobody fits the bill more than freshly retired Hayley Wickenheiser, arguably the greatest female player of all-time. She has four Olympic gold medals, a 2002 Olympic MVP award, seven World Championship golds and a Clarkson Cup. She was the first woman to play professional men?s hockey at a skater position. She?s Canada?s all-time leading scorer.

Allow me to editorialize for a second here: do it, Hall of Fame. Make a statement. Show Hayley the respect she deserves. Waive her waiting period.

He also appears to have deleted any tweet that may have suggested she was elibilgle, or at least I can't find anything like that from today. He did reply to someone who said that they made a mistake not selecting Wikcenheiser, telling them she isn't eligible until next year. I would be surprised if she isn't a first ballot hall of famer next year.

This was the tweet in question: It is, admittedly, not from today. I just read it today

Yep.  This smacks of dearleaderism, which I am already getting a g/d bellyful of every day of my continued citizenship so why do I have to put up with it in my chosen arena of escapism is what I say.

Say it A'int so !!

Say it is so! Komarov is on the decline and replaceable. The Leafs will almost certainly find a cheaper option if they want someone whose prime contributions are the same as Uncle Leo.

First they steal our colours. Then our consultants. And now our practice jersey design.
