Ok... but when a team fires a coach (or relieves them of their duties) with term on their contract isn't that the exact same thing?

Yes.  And they were ok with him choosing to quit.  What they weren't ok with, is just ripping up the existing deal and giving him a new contract at a higher value.  The same way, if the team had just finished in last place and had two years left on a coaches deal, the team wouldn't go to the coach and say "we're ripping up the last two years of your deal, but you can stay on with a new contract at a lower salary".

Well, no, because they're paying that coach exactly what they agreed to, no matter if he's coaching or not.

We don't know the details here, but if this extension was predicated on both parties agreeing to the 2 year extension, then Trotz is perfectly within his contractual rights to exit/not agree to it.

I get the feeling that this was not a contract extension that needed Trotz approval, and was automatically triggered.  If that's the case, then the Caps might have issue with it...but like any employer, what are you going to do, force the guy to coach your team?  Obviously not, so better they just allow him to move on.

Think of it this way, if the contract clause was automatic, and the salary ballooned to something like $10m, and the Caps didn't want to do it and protested, I think we'd all feel that then they shouldn't have signed the deal in the first place.

Trotz just won them a Cup and they won't give him $25M over 5 years as a reward.  That's what it boils down to.  While I think you can make the argument that he deserves that kind of "bonus," the reality is that the Caps probably won't become a multi-Cup winning team at this stage, and having Trotz behind the bench, as opposed to someone else, isn't going to make any difference in that.

Or he feels like that's what his services are worth going forward and if the Caps don't give that to him he's pretty confident he can get that elsewhere.

For years Trotz has probably negotiated his contracts and been told "Well, we're not going to pay you as much as Coach X because he has a cup and you don't" regardless of whether or not that's a fair measurement of a coach's ability. Now he's got the cup and wants to cash in on the attitudes that didn't work so well for him before.

Wonder who the other two teams could be. Really can't think of any other coaches on the hot seat right now. Maybe Minnesota/Boudreau?

I've heard Minnesota because of the Paul Fenton/Trotz connection.

How about Anaheim with Carlyle?  Are they still happy with Randy or could they can him again?

Some radio guy was saying Edmonton could have been another apparently. Doesn't matter anymore though:

Elliotte Friedman also confirmed that Lochte beat Phelps.

Looks like Trotz to Islanders is official.

good just glad Lou didn't get Sheldon Keefe. Not that Trotz is not a better coach but I just didn't want to see Lou start to pick through Leaf org .. yet

I'm trying to figure out why Chiarelli would add a little nickel to his Salary Cap for the next two seasons.

So... he takes a cap hit to shave off some real dollars paid out.
And I guess Gryba can maybe play somewhere else, rather than Bakersfield.
