2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

While it's always fun to speculate, I think the prudent thing to do here is just step back and see what's really going on.  It could be, for example, that Dermott is battling an illness.

BORING

He's sick to his stomach realizing that everyone is talking about Sandin now like they talked about him in 2018 only to realize that maybe he won't be the saviour Leafs nation is expecting him to be.

If Muz re-signs I can see the Leafs looking to move Dermott after the season is over (a draft day deal perhaps)...unless he and/or Sandin are able to show an ability to play as a top 4 D on the right side.

Dermott has really seemed to struggle this year which is a bit disappointing considering the promise he showed in his rookie season. I suppose it could be the sophomore slump thing, but at this rate he's playing himself off the team and onto the trade bait board.

This is quite possibly the most ignorant, offensive, rude, and patently false thing that has ever been written in the 13+B years of our universe's existence.

I don't see the Leafs giving up on a just turned 23 year old just yet. Don't forget he's coming off a major injury and really isn't far off his points pace. This kid has got some major skills and his footwork is also very good. He has played the right in the past so I could see him playing there also. Keefe is starting to use him more also and so far, it's been pretty good. He's second on the team in plus/minus, tied with Holl and CC. Oh and this isn't his sophomore season, it's his third and I think he's been fine and still has a lot of room to grow.

#GravelWatch2020

Some real gamesmanship going on here by Dubas and Keefe to mess with the preparations of the sens for tomorrow night.

I can just hear DJ Smith...."Is Gravel playing or not??!!  Can someone get me an answer here??!!"

I'd forgotten it was his 3rd year...which I guess makes it even more concerning that he seems to have been struggling. Keefe has only started to use him more since Rielly's injury, and prior to that he was kept to moderate 3rd pair usage. If he was really excelling it would make a lot more sense for him to have taken over Rielly's PP2 rather than Sandin. I don't put all that much stock in +/- but this season he's getting absolutely caved in on advanced stats, and that's with a slightly above average PDO.

Obviously some of that is due to injury recovery -- missing all summer training and starting the season late -- but I'm just looking at it from a depth perspective when Rielly is healthy and if Muz re-ups. At present Keefe seems to think Sandin is ahead of Dermott or at very least on a par with him, and I think it's reasonable to assume that Rielly and Muz would slot in above either of those two as the LD1 and LD2. That means if we keep both, one of them has to move over to the right side, and assuming that Lily is also ready for prime time that means that whoever switches will also be Rielly's partner (since it's a safe bet that it would be Muz + Holl as shut-down pairing).

That gives us either:

Rielly - Dermott
Muz - Holl
Sandin - Lily
Marincin

or

Rielly - Sandin
Muz - Holl
Dermott - Lily
Marincin

I don't think either is an ideal scenario. It would make a lot more sense to move one of them as part of a deal to bring back a legit 1RD. Of the two, who would be the best to lose, Dermott or Sandin? Added to that, Sandin will be exempt from the expansion draft vs Dermott will not.

I don't want to get rid of Dermott at all, but at some point we need to trade from positions of relative strength/excess (wingers and LD) to get what we desperately need (RD and a solid 2G).

Hobbes.  Keefe doesn't put Sandin ahead of Dermott or even on par with him at this time. Dermott has been playing over 20 mins where Sandin's max is around 16 but mostly its less. Against the Stars Dermott played almost 22 minutes. Sandin, almost 13. That's a huge difference. That's not being equal. I like what Sandin has brought but let's not forget, he's playing sheltered minutes for now. As for dealing from strength. That's our forwards, not LD. I'd rather have Dermott as our 7th guy then Marincin.
As for this being his third year, he only played 37 his first and around 140 total. He's just starting out. Let's also not forget he played a lot with CC when he came back. Trading Dermott has Stralman written all over it for me.

If Muzzin re-signs that's when Dermott becomes expandable in the same way and for the same reasons that a guy like Kapanen might be. That doesn't automatically mean either of them should just be given away at the first offer or that they even absolutely need to be traded, but they definitely become in play. They wouldn't be "giving up" on either player, they'd be trading valuable pieces to help shore up other parts of the team.
