2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I'll just observe that Matthews will never be truly elite until he makes himself 100% immune from viruses.  He's got the talent to do it ? we all know that.  It's just a matter of whether he's got the will and determination that it takes.

How badly does he want it???

I know these guys are doing lots of public appearances and stuff, so are they just more likely to be exposed to viruses and get these illnesses?  I have 3 kids in school and I'm not as sick as these players seem to get every season with reports of "flu going around".

I have to imagine that's part of it. They're in and around to a lot of people, they travel a lot, and come in close contact with people who travel a lot - so, they're exposed to lot of potential illnesses, including a many strains of the flu that would not be covered by the flu shot. On top of that, they're exerting themselves much more than the average person. The lifestyle of an NHL player seems like the perfect situation for illnesses to spread.

Google tells me that between 5-20% of people get the flu every year. The Leafs have had 3 players with it now. That's like 13-ish% of their players. When you consider how quickly it could potentially spread in a professional hockey teams germ filled locker room (not to mention how much time they spend at airports and hotels) that doesn't seem like a high figure.

Are we really seriously responding to "Isn't it suspicious that some hockey players got sick?".

No.

We're responding to Zee's comment that he doesn't think he gets sick as often as NHL players, and therefore something might be up here.

I don't think I get as sick as often as William Nylander, so I think maybe this is a an issue of Nylander not having enough heart to fight off viruses.  Wouldn't be surprised.

I don?t want to alarm anyone but I know for a fact that the flu is not good.  I think this is clearly a sign that the team doesn?t take their health seriously and is yet another sign of their immaturity.

Beards carry germs. This never would have happened if Lou was still our GM.

Dr. LK suggests flu is "not good" guys, which I agree with, and Nylander got it..so what does that tell you?

I don't think Nurse has succumbed to the flu this season, and given his exposure as a Nurse, should be taken into consideration in this discussion...

So....yes.

No.

It's more specific than that.

I'm responding to the fact that some NHL players get sick MORE OFTEN THAN ZEE.

This is different, and more concerning to both Zee and I.  Do you know that Zee has kids in school too?

Reported on the radio in Vancouver that Tyson Barrie wants $8m x 8 years...?!!

This is great timing for him for this to come out... ;)

Ahh, the good old super accurate Vancouver radio station report about players from teams that aren't the Canucks.

I would also like to get that contract. I hope he gets it elsewhere.

It is a fair point. Nylander's frequent illnesses have resulted in him missing...1 game in his first four seasons.

I'd imagine they're just referencing the 7 month old report that said his camp was looking for $8mil. I don't think there's been any new information about that since then.

I hesitate to say who they attributed the report to......
