2022-23 NHL Thread

Gonna be reeeaalll interesting to see how far Maurice can take this team. Because a 35-year old Marc Staal is certainly not someone I expected to be in a 2LD spot on a supposed Cup contender.

I am more concerned about the Bruins (when returned to health) than the Panthers, who binged on OT coin tosses last season (Huberdeau time) and then moved on from the coach that managed their rush system as well as their top D puckmover (Weegar).

56% (18 teams) have projected cap space less then the NHL minimum $750k

75% of the league either has no cap space or cannot add a $3mil player based on projected cap space.

5 teams (Leafs, Flyers, Bruins, Panthers  & Lightning) are going with 20 man rosters
4 teams are going with 21 man rosters
7 teams are going with 22 man rosters
Most are contenders with little cap space.

That's half the league. So Dubas should not suffer too much loneliness in making that decision - though a few of us have expressed concerns with it.

Just the weirdest thing is Ottawa drafting these amazing players on a shoestring budget and then losing them because they were cheap and dysfunctional.

With few landing spots, the cost making a cap-dump trade if everyone is healthy will be higher than usual.

Boston waived Foligno ($3.6 mil) and Rielly ($3mil). No takers. They moved them back to their roster. I guess they'll need to go when McIvoy comes off LTIR.

Foligno cost a 1st rounder in March 2021. Today, 18 months later, while earning $1.7 mil/yr less money, he's worth nothing.

There has been a little shift since yesterday

25 teams (Leafs, Flyers, Bruins, Panthers  & Lightning) are going with 20 man rosters
4 teams are going with 21 man rosters
87 teams are going with 22 man rosters

The Leafs will probably just waive Benn (who may well get claimed) when he comes off LTIR but when Liljegren does, maybe they make some moves to free a roster spot. I'm a little nervous of their position. What happens if 2-3 guys go on IR in a game? They have to play with 17-18 players the next game.

Something is fundamentally wrong with a system where salary considerations generate more discussion than the games do.

Pretty tough to escape the dollars discussions in today's major pro team sports.
Starting tomorrow night, I have a feeling the salary considerations are going to largely be secondary for much of the year. We'll have our little roster gymnastics moments as people get hurt or traded or upcoming new contracts debated. Debates on players, bad calls, dirty hits, amazing goals, good fights, soft goals, incredible saves, missed assignments, etc will take over.

Fasten your seatbelts. This could be a special year.

This has to be my favourite running bit.

I know some were quick to jump on the Leafs goaltending thus far, but Jack is not having a great night in Edmonton tonight...

Not all of them were bad (7 goals allowed in 4 periods ...) but this wrister from 41 feet, I think he would probably feel that he should have had that one.
miller-doubles-the-lead

4 goals against in 10 mins vs Calgary. They pulled him.

Even in that first game where McDavid had the hat trick. The Oilers were down 3-0 until McDavid threw the team on his back. Jack Campbell has looked an awful lot like the second half goalie we saw last year. It's early, yes, but with the Oilers being an offensively loaded team, the goalie can't continue to give up 3 or 4 goals in a period.

By the transitive property, attempted decapitation should result in a penalty of being forced to play in the All Star game.
