Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

Then you're in luck because the Leafs have a 30 goal scorer for $4.25 mil a year.

4 more years of that too. It's obviously risky, but JVR is a pretty good example of why not opting for a bridge contract can work out great for a team. Thanks Philly.

We have friends who are Winnipeg Jets fans (and season ticket holders). Just before the trade deadline, we were sitting around and we happened, in a jocular manner, to mention that Reimer might be traded to the Jets. Well, their reaction was immediate, unanimous and vehement: they said that what they had was better than Reimer.

They were talking about Pavelec and Montoya.  :o

Admittedly, I don't think Reimer has ever played well against the Jets and this may have coloured their view. It's also possible that they are vastly over-rating their own players. This is something that fans often do. Including Leaf fans.

I think Reimer's reputation (if he had one outside of Toronto) took a hit this season. In other words, I don't think the Leafs are going to get a high draft pick for him.

While I think you might be right about Reimer's trade value I don't think you can gauge what a player is worth by what a given fan believes.

I don't think anyone thought Blake was untradeable. I think just about everyone would have said that he could be moved if the Leafs took back an even worse contract which is ultimately what they did.

Obviously (and that goes for Leaf fans too ;)).

What surprised me was the force of their reaction - and the fact that they all felt the same way, no hesitation.

If there's one thing I've noticed in my time on other message boards, it's that Jets fans massively overvalue what they have while undervaluing almost any potential replacement. Anyone who believes Pavelec is better than Reimer has no idea what they're talking about, and, while Montoya is a good backup goalie, that's really all that he is.

Anybody who believes Pavelec is even an average starting goalie needs their head examined.

If he played for any team other than Winnipeg, I'd say he'd be a guaranteed compliance buyout this summer.

Reimer was let down by a poor defensive system with defencemen who played as if they did not care, by forwards whose idea of 'backchecking' is to check to see the number on the backs of turtles as the turtles skate past them, and by a coach who would be willing to throw his own grandmother under a bus.

Career:

Reimer - 140 GP, .914 SV%
Pavelec - 288 GP, .906 SV%

The .911 Sv% Reimer put up this season in what was considered to be a poor performance by him would be the 2nd highest of Pavelec's career.

At which point he'd either go over to Europe or be promptly signed to a multi-year deal by the Flyers.

It's even worse if you look at 5 on 5 SV% - of goalies playing at least 41 games this season, Pavelec was 25th out of 25.  Of goalies playing at least 21 games, Pavelec was 53rd of 59 (Reimer 35th).  Last season, min 24 games, Pavelec 24/29 (Reimer 14th).

And, it's not like you can even say that Pavelec plays for a worse defensive team than Reimer does.

It's definitely something I've noticed too. Just in general, I find Jets fans are really bordering on Red Sox fan territory.

Yeah. I mean, it's something that all fan bases do to one extent or another, but, Jets fans are definitely on the extreme end.

I kinda wish we had a 20 -25 goal player for only 4 mil a year.
We do.

Kadri had 20 goals this year - makes $2.9m.

JVR had 30 goals at 4.25m/year.

Yes we have JVR. He is good. Kadri is IMO not going to be be hear. Nor do I think his contact will stay under 5m

And with next month?s NHL draft fast approaching ? the Leafs have the No. 8 pick ? he is advising scouts to take more chances with high-risk, high-reward players who have the potential to become difference-makers.

That's a good thing.
