I have to say it. Dave Nonis is growing on me. He's straight forward, honest, informative, no bluster, nothing unprofessional, wears snappy ties and pinstripes...a class act.

Yes it's not all about him.

(And he keeps his tie on  ;))

Grabovski with McClement and Komarov at practice, after being with McClement and Orr last night.  :-X Just release him if you're going to play him with offensive black holes.

Yeah, just send him out with Iginla and Jagr already!  Sheesh, how hard is that?!

Seriously though, with Lupul hurt, who's left to put on Grabbo's wings that ISN'T a "black hole"?  Jake Gardiner?

Kessel and JVR, for two.

I've resigned myself to the fact that even if our whole lineup were just Grabs, Kessel, and the Legends of Syracuse Crunch Old-Timers team, they still wouldn't be allowed to play together.  "We need to balance the offence", etc.  So given that Grabs + Kessel = DOES NOT COMPUTE, ERR-OR, DESTRUCT, DESTRUCT, and our top two lines are built around Kessel and Kadri, that doesn't leave much left over for Mickey Clutch.

Matt Frattin at least would be nice...I'm not adverse to either McClement or Komarov on the other side...

Frattin hasn't scored in the 11 games since he returned from his injury, and a lot of that was played beside Grabovski.

Fact is though with Bozak entrenched on the top-line and Kadri playing like he is, Grabovski is going to get 3rd line wingers. And not many teams have 3rd line wingers that are known for their scoring. Once Lupul returns he'll at least have MacArthur to play with though.

Hate to say it. But if lupol is gone for an extended amount of time, I predict a colossal collapse and another missed playoffs. I hope I'm wrong.

You mean like the previous colossal collapses when Lupul was out injured/suspended for an extended and lesser amount of time?

The difference between this year and last is the short season -- the leafs have now built up enough of a cushion and there is sufficiently little time left that it will take an even larger, more rapid collapse for them to fall out of the playoffs.  It isn't impossible -- it's just less likely.

I think it's finally time for this:

Number of points gained by Leafs or lost by an opponent to eliminate them from being able to pass the Leafs:

Florida - 4
Buffalo - 10 (assuming the Leafs keep the goal differential advantage)
Tampa - 11
Carolina - 11
Winnipeg - 11
Philly - 12
New Jersey - 14
Washington - 15
NYI - 15
NYR - 17

As the season winds down the ROW tie-breaker will also help the Leafs. The Leafs have a comfortable lead on all these teams in that category, as none of the teams behind them have more than 16.

I was just thinking....isn't it nice for the Leafs to have so much depth for the first time in...well I can't remember how long....we seem to have a plethora of defensemen and competition on the first three lines...so much that you can sit a guy like Frattin whom will be a huge part of this team going forward. And to see Colbourn maturing as well....when Lupul comes back I think we may be peaking at just the right time....

Leafs have 438 giveaways/turnovers, while the Islanders and the Sharks have the second-most at 381.

Something the Leafs need to stop doing so much of, because come playoff time, this won't help them to gain in any which way.

Also,  the Leafs lead the league in shots given up (five on five).  Another thing that needs addressing.

None of these are glaring weaknesses that can't be corrected, it's just that, if the team is to have success in the playoffs, they need to pay more attention to the details, because sometimes it's the little things that make up the bigger oicture.

And oh yeah, they need Lupul to be there in the post-season  --(this is all assuming they officially secure a playoff spot) --he's a 'vet' who can also stabilize the youngsters & showcase his overall leadership for everyone.

Actually, being last in the league in shots against is a glaring weakness.  Shots against is one of the best ways to measure team defense. It means the leafs are possibly the worst defensive team in the league, whose weaknesses are covered up by good goaltending, good offense and probably a fair amount of luck.

It's also a reflection of how little time the Leafs spend with the puck in the offensive zone, heck in any zone. I hate it. I hate the way the Leafs play. I never thought I'd be this dissatisfied to be in a playoff position this late in the season. I mean, I'm ecstatic the Leafs are probably getting in, but expectations going in couldn't be lower. I don't have high hopes for a full 82 game season either...
