NHL Draft Lottery

I'd rather see McDavid skating around in Edmonton than that wasteland joke of a franchise in Phoenix or in Buffalo, after their colossal and flat out blantant tank job(s). So if it wasn't Toronto, might as well be the Oilers. Bless their incompetent little hearts, at least they tried to win.

Does it matter?  We'll be dead before the Leafs win the Cup again.

Thanks. I needed cheering up.  ;)

But really, he could become a free agent in 7 years if he plays in the NHL next season from my understanding.

And we have been playing that game since 2005.  And when it comes down to it, guys always end up re-signing.

True, though don't forget Stamkos! UFA 2016  ;)

Toronto Star Headline (2024):  UFA Conner McDavid signs with Toronto Maple Leafs after a 9 year stint with the Edmonton Oilers.  McDavid joins fellow Torontonian Steve Stamkos whom signed with the Buds back in 2016 when he became a UFA.
This gives Toronto a punch up the middle for years to come.
McDavid hopes to play with William Nylander on his wing, as Nylander has won the scoring title last 3 years consecutively.

If that really is the case, and players that start out their careers wanting to be Leafs change their minds when they get to free agency, than the Leafs need to go on a losing streak that rivals what the Oilers have gone through.

They need 2-3 first overall picks, and 4-5 more top five picks to really get this team in a spot, to not only be a perennial playoff team, but a team capable of winning multiple Stanley cups.

We as Leaf fans should be prepared for having a record of like 1 playoff berth in 14 years, because that is almost what needs to happen without having Lady Luck on our side. 'Lose to win' has to be the motto. Without luck, or players wanting to come play here, There is no other way to build a winner.

Lets hope buy trading Bozak, Lupul, Kessel and Phaneuf that we get another 1st rounder or 2, and some second rounders as well.
If we draft well and we glean a good crop, then things may not be so horrible in two or three years. But we definetly need some more top picks.

Two of those guys aren't worth anything close to a 1st rounder.

Not saying this will happen, but for super top-tier players like McDavid who are forced to play in places that they would rather not, we might see more Lindrossian demands thrown out there.  Young people today, with some justification, are far less tolerant of being yoked under employment systems that don't benefit them.  You see this with how quick they are to change jobs.

Hockey players are indoctrinated from a young age to toe the line, so I'm not saying there's going to a sea-change with how free agency works.  But if a Generational Talent? like McDavid really really really REALLY doesn't like it in EDM after 2 or 3 seasons ... I'm just saying that people of that caliber and clout could be more likely to follow Lindros's lead.

LK two of em are certainly worth a 2nd rounder?  Also McDavid looked bloody miserable when Edmonton was announced, he obviously wanted the Leaf ticket.

Or just not Edmonton.

Still angry that Edmonton won. They were by-far the least deserving team to get McDavid. Say what you will about Buffalo's blatant tank job, but I think that Murray is a pretty smart guy. He was just trying to take advantage of the system that the league put forth. Edmonton's run by incompetent people who are completely full of themselves and now they'll likely look like geniuses.

Could not agree more. We simply have to get more 1st and (at least one) 2nd round picks this year.

Yeah, the idea of the draft is that Edmonton shouldn't be in the position to have such a shot at #1 again after so many times recently.

I'm pretty sure that it was Nik that suggested that if you want to see some changes in the way they determine draft order, you'd have been rooting for Edmonton to win it.

I would hope the NHL is quite disappointed that their next superstar will be in the very limited hockey marketing opportunity that is Northern Alberta.

Aren't there changes to it already for next season?

Yeah. Starting next season, the top 3 places will be determined by lottery.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, I'm not too crazy about them messing with it.

I fully expect the Leafs to wind up dropping a spot or two next year because of the lottery because everything about this bloody sport hates us.

Through the 90s and early 2000s, the Leafs were starting to edge up their in salary, and it helped to keep them competitive.  Then the cap hit and they were left with older players and fewer draft picks.  They never recovered.  Finally, they seem on the brink of a rebuild, and they will be hit by the fact that rebuilding will become more difficult due to decreased odds of getting top players through the draft.  Once again, their timing is off.

Yup, my feeling exactly.  Leaf fans really have the decades-long Karma built up that should have gifted us McDavid over Edmonton.
