NHL Draft Lottery

Aren't there changes to it already for next season?

Yeah. Starting next season, the top 3 places will be determined by lottery.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, I'm not too crazy about them messing with it.

I fully expect the Leafs to wind up dropping a spot or two next year because of the lottery because everything about this bloody sport hates us.

Lockout already took away a lot of their financial advantages, what's one more?

LK two of em are certainly worth a 2nd rounder?  Also McDavid looked bloody miserable when Edmonton was announced, he obviously wanted the Leaf ticket.

Absolutely. His heart said Leafs, but his head needs to accept his eventual employer.  Unless, other things transpire later...

Still can't believe Oilers won the right to pick first.  Honestly thought the Buffalo Sabres were going to be a shoo-in to win what with so many of the odds in their favour.  I was also thinking perhaps, perhaps the Leafs might have just had a chance, never know, but, it turned out to have been Edmonton above all instead.

Even some Oilers fans know that McDavid to Edmonton isn't exactly a good thing:

I wrote this a few weeks ago:

"Edmonton needs to learn how to build a hockey team to win. If Lowe & Katz get their paws on McDavid there is absolutely no justice in this world.

Please hockey gods don?t send another phenomenal young talent into this purgatory nightmare. Destroy this Soddom & Gammorah of a franchise, and as MacT turns to look back on its ashes turn him into a pillar of salt."

I was thrilled last night about McDavid. But this morning after the aura of my one night stand with Oilers excitement has worn off, I feel obligated to revert to my previous opinion.

This Oilers' draft luck is not good for hockey & it's not good for Edmonton. McDavid to Edmonton was the worst financial scenario for the league. And it dooms us to another decade of immoral ownership and irresponsible management.

For crying out loud we're getting the star player from the team that our owner was using to defraud our city of hundreds of millions of dollars.

They had a chance. A 9.5 out of 100 one, in fact.

Still angry that Edmonton won. They were by-far the least deserving team to get McDavid [...] Edmonton's run by incompetent people who are completely full of themselves and now they'll likely look like geniuses.

Non leafs fans would have said the exact same thing had the leafs won the lottery.

Last year or so I would have said that the Leafs and Oilers had the two most incompetent management/front office groups in the entire league. But since then the Leafs have fired Poulin, Loiselle, Carlyle, and Nonis. The Oilers only fired their coach, who was actually getting the club to play a little better. There's really no comparison in that regard anymore.

And it would largely be true, but it really does say something when Edmonton has drafted 1st overall in 4 of the last 6 years.

Toronto Maple Leafs history of #1 draft picks: 1
That the Leafs could go through the entire Ballard era and draft 1st overall once in their history and the Oilers can do it 4 times in 6 years in an era of forced parity really says something.

I responded to Joe's comment already, but just to reiterate, the Leafs fired their incompetent hockey people before all this. The Oilers' guys all just had their jobs saved. You can't call Shanny/Dubas/Hunter incompetent at this point in time.

So, with the combination of the Oilers having likely the worst management team in place league-wide, and that terrible, pained look on McDavid's face after they won the draft, he could bolt for TO when he's 25??  Assuming he plays in the NHL next year?  And could be reunited with Strome?

Never hurts to dream, although that leaves you open to your dreams being crushed...

You all make valid points. I'm just saying that's what would have  been said regardless of the reality of the situation.

I think more people would have talked about it being rigged if the Leafs won.

That's what I mean, even at 9.5% one just never knows.  But anyway, what's been done, has been done.  Good luck to the Leafs in the (entry) draft.

That's the funniest/saddest part.

I read something a little while ago too that the Oilers were looking to jack up the prices on new season ticket subscriptions to help pay for the arena as well. People obviously weren't too happy about that. Guess now they'll probably pay whatever they have to to get tickets to the Connor McDavid show.

The Oilers better see if they are actually able to sign McDavid before they use him as an excuse to raise ticket prices.

Why wouldn't they be able to sign him? He will get the rookie maximum, and I highly doubt he would demand a trade.
