With Booth's improving play at the end of the season. Do anyone think we give him another one year contract next season?

I don't see why we wouldn't, especially if more forwards are traded away.

Bigger question might be, do other teams take note of his improvement and make offers...and if so, does Booth choose to go elsewhere?

When you look at his numbers over the entire season, they're not very good.  I'm guessing teams have more reliable options than him they would look to sign.  Hopefully they sign him to a 1-year deal, he keeps improving, and then gets moved at the deadline.  Good for everyone!

He has 10 points in his last 19 games (2 in his first 27).  His last 20 games in 13-14 he had 7 points (12 in first 46).

That season ended up getting him his current deal with the Leafs.  He'll be 32 in November - he isn't worth much of anything right now.  There are players all over the league and the AHL that could provide that production.

I wouldn't mind having him back. Seems like a really good guy. I'd rather have him on the fourth line than an enforcer (please tell me those days are over.)

I'm not really seeing a lot of options from the Marlies to fill in the gaps. I like Bodie for the fourth line too, but I suspect he's got a role to fill on the Marlies.

What I have seen so far he need to play 10 -15 a game, not 6 like our fourth line plays.

Dealing Dion: There?s widespread belief the Leafs could have done a deal with Detroit involving Dion Phaneuf at the deadline, but backed off, thinking a better trade option might emerge over the coming months. At least two other teams have since approached Toronto about a Phaneuf trade.

Hallelujah.

It's Cox - it might as well be from Eklund

Or from you.

So here's an idea that's almost certainly a little whiskey-aided. Right now the Leafs should be looking to trade Kessel. To get a good return for Kessel I think you need to find a team that:

A) Is on the cusp of being quite good, as a bad team won't want to build around him and a good team probably won't have the cap space
B)  Won't be scared off too much by the "character concerns"
C) Will play an up-tempo sort of game that makes the most out of Kessel's speed and shot
D) Has enough good young players in place that they won't be selling the farm in order for the Leafs to get a good return

So Edmonton gets mentioned as a potential trade destination but I really think they're too bad to make those kinds of moves. I think you need to think your core is in place to take that next step. So what about Calgary? They're a team that will probably just miss the playoffs with a top young centre already in place, a team that could use some secondary scoring and has a guy running the team who's pretty big on Kessel. So what about something like this:

To Calgary:
Phil Kessel, Jake Gardiner, James Reimer

To Toronto:
Sam Bennett, Matt Stajan, Ladislav Smid, 2015 second round pick

Now, ordinarily Bennett is the sort of prospect I would rule out getting traded at all but I think this makes some sense. Monahan is already there and forming a pretty solid combination with Gaudreau. They add three players Burke likes who each fill a need of sorts. The Leafs eat some bad money but get a top centre prospect and a top 45 draft pick. Matt Stajan returns to Toronto, which I think is would be hilarious.

But more to the point this deal would pass my central smell test which is I don't think it's a clear win for both sides and, as a Leafs fan, I'd have to think about it. I'd love to land Bennett but while I don't think Kessel individually could land a prospect with his sort of upside I do legitimately think there's a possibility that dealing Kessel, Gardiner and Reimer individually could land a collection of picks/prospects that might work out better.

Calgary takes on a lot of risk and Burke runs the risk of the bad optics of trading another top young centre for Kessel. That said, with Ramo leaving they add a potential top 10 scorer in the league, a good mobile defenseman and a serviceable back-up goalie while only increasing their cap commitments by 8 million or so and it might be argued that they're a team that will have a hard time landing premium UFA's.

I've probably overthought it. A Kessel to Calgary trade would probaby just revolve around the 13th or 14th pick or whatever they end up with. Still, I could talk myself into it if I were running either team.

Wonder if Toronto is on O'Connor's list of possible teams ?

Chris Johnson said that the Leafs are at 50 contracts, so given that O'Connor wants to play this season it's very unlikely.

Id be happier with Bennett and the second for Kessel, obviously.

You make a good case, I still think you're selling a little low though.

I don't know if you mean I'm selling low as in I'm trading Kessel at an inopportune time or that he could fetch more or maybe both but regardless you might be right. What I'd disagree with though is that while you might convince me that Kessel traded on his own might fetch a package that could be argued to be better in total I would really question the idea that he'd land any single asset as valuable as Bennett.

if O'Connor wanted to play here they could buy out a contract , couldn't they ?

Not quickly enough for this season.

Like Bailey, O'Connor apparently prefers to get a NHL game in this season to toll a year off his entry level contract (more money as a RFA sooner idea).

O'Connor & Boston U won their regional game. If they win another today (I think), they're into the Frozen Four that ends the same day as the NHL season.

Awkward for him to sign with a playoff team to get in a game as most have a pretty decent starter (I suppose he could sit on the bench). But I guess anything is possible. I'm fuzzy on the rule.

When I saw Boston U had a chance to play on, it made me wonder if the Leafs might still have a shot .... we can use every break we can get right now ..

posted this under Prospects but it is timely, Boston just beat M/D

IMHO Minnesota/Duluth was ripped with under a minute, pulling their goalie with almost 2 minutes, they put the puck in the net with their 6 on 5 advantage.  Was whistled dead after puck in the net. More BS.
Eischel looked alright but not great, think he too will need a season in the AHL.
Toninato looked OK but he was up against Eischel.
The revelation was Cameransi who was all over the ice, every shift giving it his all.
A real spark plug with some major talent.  May make the big club one day. Reminded me of a young Mogliny with a good defensive game.
