Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Since you guys watched the game, does Minnesota have an enforcer?  I couldn't really tell looking through their lineup.

They have Matt Kassian, who fought Konopka in that game. But he's an AHL-level enforcer, so I'd say the theory still stands.

Define "fought".  I thought Konopka was a fighter, but he seems to be more like another Neil.  Willing to scrap a lot, but is a master at tying, rather than winning fights.

The real heavyweights will still be squaring up with Carkner.

What a bizarre start for Filatov.

1st game: Top line
2nd game: 4th line
3rd game: Healthy scratch
4th game: AHL

Dude got sent to the minors today.  I figure over the next week he will sign in Russia, then retire, than die.

  :) Too funny.

Any word on off-ice/practice issues he's been having? There's gotta be more to this. How do you give up a 3rd for the guy, apparently promise him top-6/PP time, give him that chance for one game, and then basically pull the plug on the experiment completely?

He looked dangerous in the pre-season. Like CTB said, I gotta think there's more to it. You're a franchise going through a rebuild and this kid has talent and potential, enough so that you can easily warrant playing him on one of the top two lines for an extended period of time. He's had his time in the AHL and it's now time for him to prove what he can do in the NHL. Certainly some other issues.

Konopka has message for lugheaded Leafs
http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/12/konopka-has-message-for-lugheaded-leafs
Zenon Konopka doesn?t understand what the Toronto Maple Leafs don?t understand.

After Wednesday?s practice, Konopka was still shaking his head at comments from Leafs coach Ron Wilson and captain Dion Phaneuf, who wondered why Phaneuf would have to defend himself for his big, clean open-ice hit on diminuitive Senators centre Stephane Da Costa Saturday night.

After the bodycheck, Phaneuf was pursued by an angry Nick Foligno and later would have had to deal with Chris Neil had Luke Schenn not stepped in the way.

?(Phaneuf) doesn?t get it? He doesn?t get it? He doesn?t have to get it,? said Konopka, who has had two fights in two games as a Senator.

?He just has to know that if he makes a hit like that, he?s going to have to answer the bell. I don?t care if he gets it.?

Hey Sens fans, give this deadhead a hug next time you go to the game!  :D

So, Anderson's doing a great job of earning that spiffy new contract Murray gave him a few games after acquiring him, ain't he?

A good hockey play means you have to fight afterward? I guess guys better prepare themselves after they score a goal then too.

He's right.  I don't understand why fans are so mystified and outraged when someone challenges an opponent after a hard, but clean, hit.

You know it's clean because you're watching on an HDTV from home with instant replay, slow motion and PVR.  The players on the ice get to see it once, at full speed, with their attention on more than just the puck carrier, and their sight lines often obstructed by other players.  They often just hear the crowd roar, and see a teammate lying prone on the ice with an opponent skating away.

And regardless, these players are there to win games and earn paycheques, not be classy and make friends.  A teammate getting devastated by a hit, clean or not, is not good for your team.  Momentum goes to the opposition, and you've got a player hurting.  There are a couple ways to nullify that, the biggest being scoring a goal or beating the crap out of someone.  Fighting is easier than scoring.

Then look at the players doing it.  Nick Foligno and Chris Neil are roleplayers who aren't scoring.    They need to do something to help their team, or they'll be in the doghouse.

You may not like it, but fighting after a hit happens for a reason.

With reference to Filatov, his and Butler's benchings reportedly have more to do with attitude/work ethic than play.  MacLean was doing that to send a message, not because they suck.  I guess Butler got the message and Filatov didn't.

So this Nail Yakupov guy.  Think he'll make the Sens out of camp next year?

Fighting is something that happens between two consenting players.  If you have done something within the rules of the game and don't want to fight (say if there was an instance where a fighter came after a guy not known as a fighter), I don't see why that player would be expected to 'answer the bell'.

If you don't like the hit, throw a hit of your own, but don't talk about players not 'getting it' because you think you need to fight to prove something.

You don't have to like it, but it happens for a reason.  I didn't see the comments made by Phaneuf/Wilson, but if they're acting confused about the whole affair, they're intentionally playing dumb.  It's gamesmanship.

They can whine about it, but every team does it.

Serious question: Do either of those Murray boys know what they are doing?  I'll give Tim the benefit of the doubt but I seriously believe Brian is useless.

Tim is money, and likely to be our next GM.  He's in charge of the AHL team that won the Calder Cup last year.

I think Bryan is going a little crazy though.

Yeah, pretty much.  I don't think much was said, certainly not anything that needed responding to by Konopka.
