Parise to Minnesota

Or a little more than $35M tied up in 5 players.

True. 5 guys at $6M+, 3 of which at $7.5M. The rest of their roster is going to be pretty thin. I mean, look at the rest of their blue line. After Suter, it's not good.

How's the breakdown of the deal? I think the term is just nuts, carrying them all the way until 40? I wouldn't be surprised if these contracts bite them in the ass sometime int he future.

So, just spitballin' here, but does anyone think that these signings put Backstrom seriously into play on the trade market?

If anything I think it's the opposite. After major moves like this, they need stability in net next season, or someone's gonna get fired.

This is great news for the Wild, congratulations on pulling it off!  Their fans must be through the roof with excitement right now!

why did they want minnesota?  I would have understood it it was like Detroit or another contending team.  What does minnesota have to offer?

Guaranteed money until age 40?

Parise was born there and Suter was born nearby in Madison, Wisconsin.

Well, I'm happy these guys were taken out of the eastern conference.  New Jersey is weaker next year.  None of our closer competitors were able to upgrade.  Ideally, Matt Carle goes to Detroit so Philly gets weaker.

I think the 7.5-million-cap-hit, billion-year contract is fairly par for the (elite UFA) course and I'm not the slightest bit surprised by the contracts.  My rule of thumb is to predict the maximum you think is reasonable and then add a couple of million and 5 more years.  I actually wouldn't have been surprised to seen Parise get an 8.5 million average salary.

I think Minnesota improved their team a lot today. If I were them, I'd probably consider trading Heatley for a collection of lesser talented players to give them more depth.

Well thats not the reason as both players had multiple multi year offers. Parise is from MIN & Suter is from WIS so being close to home must've been a factor.

That's true, the Islanders, Blue Jackets and Oilers all missed out! :)

Seriously though, I'm so glad the Red Wings and Flyers struck out for once, even if I do think Suter is massively overrated. Parise, however, is the real deal.

Parise said going home and playing with someone he grew up with in Suter is why he chose Minny.  They left more money on the table elsewhere, so the Wild said.

I find that questionable. Both Detroit's and Nashville's offers to Suter were reported to be in the 12 year/$90M range. I doubt he left much, if any, money on the table.

I suppose Philly or the Rags could have ponied up some crazy money, because god knows they don't mind doing that. But my gut says your right in that it wouldn't have been much more beyond the 98M that Minny offered.
