Ranking Prospects 2020-2021

I can't remember the last KHL centre drafted in the upper half of the 1st round. Just based on the way the KHL is like... anti-development at the top level, and the North American bias in general against Russians... he'd have to be a unicorn-level talent.

Klim Kostin is the closest St. Louis 2017 #31, followed by Evgeny Kuznetsov 2010 #26 to the Capitals. For a KHL centre drafted actually in the top half, that'd be Evgeni Malkin 2004's #2.

5. Nick Robertson
4. Rasmus Sandin

These baby Buds are a year or less from breaking onto to the NHL roster; the front office has stacked their lineup slots with temporary established depth with the dual purpose of buying them development time and/or pushing them to new levels to force the issue (Amirov should be in this mix, but newness and lack of information helped underrate him).

They're essentially tied in this ranking and probably most others, but because they don't occupy the same playing niche, there is no in-fighting, only basking in the glow of having exciting prospects in the pipeline again that have either put up good performance against professional leagues or completely dominated their junior league.

In-fighting is back on the menu tomorrow!

How is he underrated if he's at 6 on this list?

....nvd. You're saying he should be lumped in with 5 and 4?

Yeah I think he is in contention to top out as the better all rounder than Robertson. What is far more fun though:

Robertson - Matthews - Marner
Amirov - Tavares - Nylander

Well, that's exciting then that he's at least in that conversation. It'd be great if he can develop into at least a good second liner. I'm always cautious with prospects like Robertson (though he's still so young!): those who are somewhat known for one elite skill.

I had the same worry early on last season (junior goalzz), but judging by his progress and how he works, I don't have too many worries about Robertson. He's not yet built for it, but he believes 'through' is a viable option to surmounting obstacles: Zach Hyman -size +++shot

The other two have more in the toolkit to impact the game off the scoresheet, but goals are what matter at the end of the day.

I wouldn't be bothered in the slightest by:
Robertson - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Nylander - Hyman
Amirov - Hallander - Anderson

Don?t we need a bigger guy on wing with Matthews to pop pucks out of the corner?

I hope you're being sarcastic.  No we don't. You need someone who has a willingness to  forecheck and battle. Matthews is more then capable of getting a puck and Robertson doesn't shy away from the corners either.

I think it's a fair question, given you want Matthews in shooting position and Marner and Robertson are relatively smol and we don't want them to be smushed. I do think it's not much of an issue if their playstyle continues to be dump-averse and both of the wingers, while not prototypical bruisers in any sense, have shown they know how to manipulate defenses and come away with the puck anyway in spite of their size. In any case, I was envisioning Robertson and Matthews being F1/2 on retrievals, with Marner hanging high to rotate down the funnel to open up one of the shooters once they have possession.

I know it's just a tournament and no matter how well or bad they do here, it really doesn't mean anything but I've liked his game. Kid looks like a great pick. Let's see how it goes as the games get tougher from here.

This is the guy Dubas traded up some 220 spots for.
