Reimer and Morin to Sharks for Stalock, Smith and conditional 4th

I'll give you it's an underwhelming return, but what were we really expecting back from Reimer? I think most people had him pegged for a 3rd rounder, middling goalies just don't get that much back in return. And in that article from Steve Simmons where he asked a bunch of scouts and stuff what the Leafs could get in return for players at the deadline, the consensus was actually a 4th round draft pick. So we're basically just back to being upset about a pick not being in the most recent draft year (or even the draft after that), but even Lou mentioned today having to be mindful of the 50-contract limit.

Yeah. This isn't a situation where there was a real bidding war or teams looking at a the guy as being an everyday contributor in their playoff run. He was acquired to be a backup goalie. The teams looking for starters and willing to pay starters prices aren't looking for rentals at the deadline. The return on Reimer is going to reflect that reality.

I'm sad to see Reimer go.  :-[.  Like everyone is saying, he was such a good guy plus  I think with good health and on a half decent team he could be a legit #1 NHL goaltender.  I'm a little surprised and disappointed they couldn't get more back for him, but oh well.  I would have thought they would go with Stalock as the backup for the rest of the year but it sounds like they're going with Sparks and/or Bibeau.

After reading all of the posts in the thread I still think we got robbed on this trade. Whether or not Reimer is a UFA at the end of the season or not. We gave garbage Bernier $4 mil a season, I would rather had Reimer at that price and traded Mr soft goal Bernier. We got robbed

Play Bernier hard and if he helps us to the bottom and the 1st pick he will have earned his 4 million.

and what exactly do you think the market for bernier is like right now?

It's not an either/or situation. Neither goalie figures to be around when the team gets good and both will almost certainly be traded as pending UFAs.

Seriously, San Jose almost certainly made this trade hoping that Reimer plays absolutely no meaningful minutes in the playoffs. How much is that really worth?

I honestly hope that Reimer is given the reins in SJ, if not just to see how good a goalie he actually is. He's played on mostly abysmal defensive teams in Toronto over his career - I'd love to see him with more talent on the ice.

That's not an option that actually was out there, though. No one is looking to add Bernier as a backup for a playoff run. With Reimer, realistically, the options were trade him for whatever you can get for him or risk losing him for nothing in the summer. They reportedly had discussions with him about a new contract, and they weren't close to getting anything done.

This seems like a pretty crappy return for Reimer.  I mean Edmonton just traded a garbage goaltender for a 5th round pick.  I would hope that Reimer would be worth a little more than Anders Nilsson.

At the same time is a GM supposed to make a deal based on the terms of another deal they consider bad?  If one GM wants to give up something for a bad player doesn't necessarily mean teams are obligated to use that as a benchmark.

And really, if it's stuff we talk about on here you can be sure it was discussed by the management of both teams.

Sure.  And yet we don't go around stopping people from praising the return when San Jose overpaid for Polak.  Just because this was the best return they got from San Jose doesn't mean it was the best return possible.  Our GMs aren't infallible.

Keep laughing. It's a fail.

The only way this can be a fail is if there was a better deal on the table, and I doubt there was.

Hardly.

This is a trade that did not need to have been made.

Why trade away a decent goalie for next to nothing, and to have to wait until 2018 at that?

The pretext of being able to see the two AHL goalies is a sham. They have an idea what they have in Bibeau and in Sparks and they have ample opportunity during the garbage games to come to spot them into the line-up.

Reimer is a serviceable goalie, perhaps not the second coming of Georges Vezina, Jacques Plante or Martin Brodeur, but decent just the same.

To deal him for a 4th round pick two years hence is as ill considered as it is unnecessary.

Now if it had been Bernier going for that return, I would find that more understandable because he carries another year at $4.5M. That said, Bernier likely has close to zero trade value (say, like bringing a 2018 4th rounder in return). We could have taken back a stiff and his contract to make that happen I would have thought. I am somewhat surprised there was not a better deal available through St. Louis, but seemingly not.

I would have preferred that they make no trade than to have made this one.

Make no trade rather than this one? And  if Reimer decided to sign with another team you don't even get that 4th. Is that a better option?

I understand the return is underwhelming, but he's going to be an unrestricted free agent in a couple of months. At that time the return will be zero.

So, in every imaginable sense, something is greater than nothing.

Forget what we got which the consensus from the negative amongst us agrees is proper, my viewpoint is more than likely wrong in most of the eyes in this forum, is that they traded the wrong goalie. I have followed Reimer closely for his entire pre NHL career till now and he has always risen above at every level, overcome injurys at every level to become a very good NHL Goalie. His save percentage for half the season was in the top two in the league. He is only going to get better.
In saying all this I am very sad to see him go. Why?  Because he is a leader and has a super positive attitude, no one better to mentor Sparks and Bibeau. I just don't see it with Knuckles.
Good luck Reimer, all the best and will be cheering for you.

His contract was expiring.

They weren't close when negotiating a new contract.

Nobody wanted Bernier.

The Leafs get a pick from San Jose.

Reimer and The Leafs have already both said they'd be interested in talking in the summer.

People need to relax.

Nothing is better than something?  Please tell me this is a joke.

This. A million times this. Everyone who's complaining about the Leafs having moved the wrong goalie needs to accept that no one was trading for Bernier to be their backup goalie on a playoff run. Not when he has another year on his contract that counts for $4.15M on the cap. Trading him instead of Reimer was not a realistic option. The Leafs don't just get to impose their will on to other teams when it comes to trades. There aren't a lot of teams looking to pick up goalies at this deadline, and none of them are looking for potential starters or any goalie who they'd have to commit to past this season. A deal for Bernier wasn't on the table. A trade for Reimer was, and, considering the lack of buyers for goalies, this was unfortunately likely the best they could do. It's an underwhelming return, yes, but that's just the reality of the situation.

Because of his contract status. How hard is this to understand? The Leafs don't have him contractually past the next 20 or so games which are games they don't want to win. If they want him around next year, they're free to try and sign him.

He might want a contract that's unreasonable. What in the world is the benefit to the team keeping him around for the next month? Trading Reimer isn't an endorsement of Bernier, it's basically the opposite.
