Steve Stamkos?

Also, we should maybe cool it on the "deepest prospect group in the league" stuff until it comes from a slightly more reputable source than Bleacher Report.

From various articles and radio banter I suppose it's a foregone conclusion that the Leafs will try to sign Stamkos. I had my doubts a week ago.

Never forget that at this time of year "_____ to the Leafs?" generates clicks.

Yes, very true. Matt Martin anyone?

You keep those horse blinders on. There's only 1 more lap to go.

he's also the only one in the list who's ever been available.

Which is relevant how?

'I'll take player x over player y' - how is that relevant is player X was never available as an option to take?

What relevance is there on the players that may be better than stamkos and one would take them over him if that player was never on the market as a player anyone could make a pitch for?

Because that was connected to the larger point we were discussing there about which route a player signing his first post-ELC contract can take that will yield the largest total earnings over his career. What we were discussing was that on that list of seven players Stamkos is arguably the least good, and certainly in the bottom half, but there's a legit chance he'll earn the most of any of them in his 13 post ELC years. The contention was that Stamkos signing a 5 year extension proved something about his intentions, our point was that signing a 5 year extension maximized his earning potential.

It was not "I'll take Kane" in the sense of I'd rather sign Kane this summer, it was just noting the incongruity between where Stamkos would rank on that list by how good he is vs. where he might very well rank by earnings.

Trust me, busta and I have gone over why we don't think the Leafs should sign Stamkos ad nauseaum in this thread. Him not being as good as Crosby or Kopitar wasn't one of them.

I was just responding to that one point I saw - I did not see the context or the history.

I'm not going to lie - I've read maybe 15% of this thread.

Hit it !  :D

I never strayed from us landing Babcock and I'm not about to for Stammer, either.

Come home and share the centennial with us as a LEAF!

I'm not sure if anyone has posted it, but there was a small section in this LINK that suggests Shanahan has met with Meehan to express the Leafs' interest in Stamkos

And then there?s Stamkos' hometown of Toronto. Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan has already met with Stamkos' agent Don Meehan to inform him of their interest.

That's what prompted me to think they are going to make some kind of reasonable offer. It may still be 2 million less than Boston or Detroit offers or something, but it's hard to believe there won't be an offer of some kind at this point.

I also keep seeing that Tampa is still in the running, that I find hard to believe unless TB offers more than they have so far. If he's going to sign for less, then I imagine he's sign in Toronto over TB, if he's going to sign for the most dollars, that won't be TB either.

That is when the first new UFA signed contracts are permitted to be announced, yes.

Great.  I'll be at my desk with a turkey sandwich and a bottle of champagne at the ready.

Maybe but it's important to keep in mind that at least with Tampa because of their lack of state income tax it's a situation unlike Toronto where he could sign for less than other teams are offering and still take home the same.

He could also go 8 years, assuming he wants max term.
