The Lupul Situation

I understand with regards to the bonus overages achieved this season; I was answering the question assuming SI meant the overage from last season (2016-17) affects calculations this season's Cap (2017-18); does it mean 75M - 5.3M for the whole season? I don't think it does.

i.e. when does this year's hit of last year's overages get calculated? If you subtract the bonus hit (5.37M) and a couple of waiver-exempt players to cut, we're just under 75. But the salary cap is calculated daily based on active NHL roster + IR.

It's a lump sum, just like a buy-out or retained salary. It gets tacked on at the beginning of the season. Think of it like it's like an immovable contract - the pro-rated amount is included with the calculations every day.

In other words, yes, it's $75M - $5.37M all season.

Oh thanks. Positioning it like a buyout/retained salary helped me make sense of it.

Nice for an independent doctor to make "Robidas Island' more legit....I don't see Lou getting a doctor to fake this kinda stuff.

Bending and 'by-the-letter' machinations for sure. Outright breaking and fraud... that's a helluva lot to risk your reputation and the reputation of your subordinates on.

Painting the Leafs' organization as potential cheats  (even in a joking manner) and actually labeling them as such are two different things.

The first hints as a probable and the second reaffirms the former.  Neither of these above accusations was real.

Lupul is the real cheat, both in words & actions.  Lesson learned.

Glad this is cleared up but frankly I think all the talk about the Leafs being hamstrung by young guys growing salaries is over-blown.

I look at it this way...

1. With bonuses, Nylander was making 1.6 million. Lupul's 5.2 million coming off the books can cover that, putting him in Johnny Gaudreau salary range. I don't see him getting more than that unless he is the second coming of Connor McDavid this year, note that is hyperbole.

2. Ditto for Marner on money with bonuses currently and a pay hike of similar proportions. With Cowen and Gleason coming off the books, that a $2 mil savings. Assuming the cap grows as it has by about $2 million a year, that $4 million toward his raise, and replace Fehr with Altonen and save another million. That"s Marner done, next...

3. Auston Mathews currently comes in at about $3.8 million when you add in bonuses, so he needs about another $7 million to get him done. Take $2 million from the subsequent year cap hike and make the 3rd year of Marleau disappear and that's done. I suspect the Leafs have a way to do that in mind or they never would have signed him for the 3rd year, knowing Mathews would have to be re-upped then.

They could also let some of their UFAs walk, but maybe they can hang on to at least two of them. I think Bozak and Komarov have to resign for pretty much the same dollars if they want to remain in Leafland. They are essentially both 3rd liners though playing on different lines. Kadri is our second best centre. Bozak is just playing with two top 6 wingers. JVR is another story, if he puts up similar numbers, he'll be entitled to a decent raise, probably in the Marleau range. The Leafs could easily let Bozak walk to accommodate this or just trade him for picks. Then shift, I think (contrary to popular opinion) Marner to centre and insert another right winger, Kapanen, Bracco into the lineup, with Brownie probably moving up a notch.

Hainsey later comes off the books at $3 million just in time for a nice raise for Jake Gardiner, and a cheaper young alternative (Liljegren, Rosen, Dermott) slips in the line-up.

This scenario is built on a few assumptions: cap continues to rise at same rate as recent years, Leafs know they'll be able to ditch 3rd year of Marleau contract, and the don't go out and make a deal for a high costs player without shedding an equivalent amount of salary.

I do think it's all very realistic and the "cap crunch" is more of an over-hyped media thread, though I still agree the Leafs have to manage it carefully. But I don't see things as being as desperate as being portrayed out there.

Just going to file this here because we were talking about it:
https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2017/10/7/16438232/toronto-maple-leafs-have-made-roster-decisions-because-of-ltir-and-bonus-rules-salary-cap

Opening Roster "winners": Marincin, Moore, Fehr, Borgman

Mentioned earlier was the Performance Bonus cushion of 7.5% of the cap that teams could not exceed without limiting their total Cap ceiling, which at the outset of the season limited them to only one ELC player being able to fit on the opening roster (Rosen/Borgman/Aaltonen).

But Babcock wanted Rosen and Borgman.

The Leafs got around that with some LTIR usage:
1) maxed out their cap usage before LTIR by retaining more immediately expensive players: Fehr, Marincin
2) put Horton on LTIR to get most of his 5.3M in relief
3) put Lupul on LTIR to get all of his 5.25M in relief

Now they had plenty of space to go over the performance bonus cushion, so they moved to the players they actually wanted on the roster
4) Waive Marincin
5) Call up Rosen

Rosen's performance bonus shaves off more from our usable cap, but since we're no where near that ceiling at the moment due to LTIR relief, it's pretty much irrelevant and largely offset by the cap space recouped from burying Marincin.

Lupul has resurfaced!

Put it this way: I haven?t skated in a solid year,? said Lupul. ?I?ve played hockey probably 80 per cent of the days since I was 16 years old. We were playing 80 games a year, you practice, you get three days off a month, [but] otherwise you?ve got your skates on and you?re playing hockey. I think it?s pretty natural for any player once their career ends ? and actually, I?m still, I?m injured this year, I?m still under contract, but I was not able to pass a physical and come back and play ? but I think it?s pretty natural for someone to just kind of take some time off

This is not the first time the Leafs have kind of buggered up the end of the career of one of its players who was in no way a problem while he was on the roster.  Lupul was one of the bright spots of talent (when healthy, yes) during some pretty dismal years for us fans.  I for one wish him well.

I wish him and his huge bank account all the best, he can suffer if he choses in relative comfort.  I would help he is healthy enough to use his earnings to date to benefit not only himself but others.  I liked Lupul  a lot.

By the sound of it, he's calling it a career.

All the best to Joffrey Lupul.  I agree with ZBBM, when he (Lupul) was healthy, he was a dandy to watch.  He had skill & talent and provided Leaf followers with exciting scoring moments on ice.

I don't know how the Leafs have buggered up the end of his career?  From the quotes that Lupul made just this past weekend he said he hasn't even SKATED in a year.  That means since at least Feb 2017, how are the Leafs to be held responsible if he's not even working towards making a comeback?

As the article says, they just disappeared him in 2016:

Lupul?s future intentions are unknown because of the mysterious way the Leafs have handled his situation. He was basically excommunicated from the organization after playing his 701st career game in Ottawa on Feb. 6, 2016....

I've made my views on this pretty clear but I do think this is a situation where some forthrightness from a normally tightlipped organization would have been welcome.

Because as much as some people here might have liked to have claimed otherwise it never seemed like the Leafs particularly cared if Lupul came back or not and, really, it seemed like they were happy to see the back of him. There's been a lot of speculation about why that is and while I respect that they may not have wanted to air his dirty laundry they could have at least been honest about how they felt, along the lines of "Even if Joffrey does get healthy, we think his time here is done" which would at least make their position clear without embarrassing anyone.

As is, I think their behaviour has fed into the speculation and made them look not terribly decent about the whole thing.

Bottom line for me, he isn't healthy enough to play so he's gotten about 9 mil to go play golf. If he was healthy enough to play and the Leafs didn't want him, they could have traded him, sent him to the minors, sat him in the pressbox. He was a good player but became injury prone and that was what ended his career.

Not that it matters at this point, but Leafs giving #19 to Plekanec one last jab at Lupul? He is still technically under contract until the end of this season, could have made #19 off limits until then?

Found this in an old Toronto Star article regarding Lupul's jersey number:
"In his six seasons with the Maple Leafs, he has worn No. 19 in admiration of Hall of Famers Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman. The digits mean something to him."
