Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

I am about to go crazy again after drinking my Armchair GM coolaid.  I only wanted to see Nonis do 2 major changes to the Leafs roster and only upgrade a top 6 center and a top pairing dman BUT I now would like to consider Bolland's friend Clarkson although not necessary and maybe swap the captain although again not necessary.

I have been watching the team payrolls in the NHL and have been surprised with:

San Jose.
Cap space per player: $881,111

Need to sign 3 players including:
Tyler Kennedy (newly aquired and made $2 MIL last year)
13th Forward
backup Goalie

As you all know, I have been suggesting that since San Jose's top 4 scorers last season were all natural centers and SJ just re-signed Couture to a $6 MIL/year contract that Thornton might be the one available in a trade.  Played all 48 games scoring only 7 goals but he had 33 assists. He is signed to make $6 MIL in salary which has been declining $1 MIL a year for the last couple of years.  If he could be extended this summer after the trade to a 3 year deal starting in 2014 making $6 MIL, $5 MIL and $4 MIL (in 2016/17 season when he is 37) for a $5 MIL cap hit it would bridge a 4 year gap to develop/sign/trade for another top 6 center.  I still feel that because of the cap crunch that SJ has they would prefer a couple of decent prospects and a 2nd pick.

Vancouver:
Cap space per player: $1.07 MIL

Need to sign 7 players including:
Mason Raymond  (made $2.275 MIL last year)
Maxim Lapierre (made $1 MIL last year)
Chris Tanev (rumoured to be getting $1.8 MIL)

Derek Roy?? (made $4 MIL last year)
Andrew Alberts (made $1.2 MIL last year)

Since Edler is being peddled I would suggest Liles, Gunnarsson and Ashton.  Add an extra piece if needed as there won't be many roster spots available for a few years anyway.

Not necessary and VERY expensive, almost moved on but still dreaming a little bit,
Nashville.

With rumblings about Nonis and Phaneuf, I look at July 24th circled on my calendar and wonder about switching captains with Nashville with the Leafs 1st pick 2014 going the other way as well?  Nashville has already vomited $27 MIL to Weber in less than a calendar year BUT still owe $77 MIL in the next 8 years thanks to Paul Holgrem's concept of money.  Phaneuf as a LH can play with Jones as a RH.

Caveat, SJ would have to retain some salary for Weber to work. (Obviously $1.5 MIL)

UFA Signing Clarkson to a reasonable deal to play like Hartnell or Gary Roberts and NOT expect Lucic or Stewart.  Join him with Colborne and Bolland.  Again, not necessary if over-priced and just re-sign MacArthur for $3.25 MIL.

Force McClement to play with the bash brothers.

The whole reason Edler's available is because the Canucks are desperate to clear cap space, they wouldn't agree to a deal that saw them taking on more.

I really think Clarkson will happen, though I'm not sure I want it to.

How about we'll be in on all of Clowe, Ference and Weiss, and land one or 2.

I really hope they don't over spend on UFA's.. the UFA crop really isn't that good. The top UFAs always get overpaid.

I'm hoping for a blockbuster including a 1A Center coming our way.

Big day ahead today. Let's hope everything management is aiming for pans out.

Just want to put this out there as food for thought.

Out:

Grabbo : GP 48  9G  7A    16Pts
Mac      : GP 40  8G  12A    20Pts
Frattin  : GP 25  7G  6A    13Pts
Komarov: GP 42  4G  5A      9Pts

Scrivens: GP 20  7W  9L  2.69 GAA  0.915 SV%

In:

Bolland :  GP 35  7G  7A    14Pts
Clarkson: GP 48  15G  9A    24Pts

Bernier:  GP 14  9W  3L  1 OTL  1.88 GAA  0.922 SV%

So far we're better off in the goaltending position and slightly behind in the scoring (though the 2 players that replace Frattin and Komarov shouldn't have too hard a time making it up).

Clarkson and Bolland should replace the hitting of Komarov and spread it over 2 lines. I'm too lazy to check, but I'd guess that the give aways/take aways should be better with Clarkson/Bolland vs. Grabbo/Mac, let alone Frattin.

Without talking contracts, I think the team is shaping up to be more responsible defensively, offensively with the puck (keeping it that is) and just as good on the forecheck. Clarkson brings some toughness that the other 4 didn't (i.e. he'll fight).

Look forward to seeing how the rest of the roster fills out.

Shut your face...there's no room for optimism around here.

Nonis is an idiot, and Carlyle is a tyrant.

This team sucks.

I can't wait until Carlyle wins coach AND GM of the year honours while Nonis cries in a corner.

Stupid Nonis.

If I were the oilers, who need defense badly, I would dual offer sheet the Leafs.  Here are the compensation levels of interest:

$ 1,552,794 $ 3,105,684 2014 2nd round pick
$ 3,105,684 $ 4,658,386 2014 1st round pick, 2014 3rd round pick

I'd offer maybe $4 million to Franson and 3.1 to Gunnarson.

Even as it stands, I don't see many avenues for the leafs to fill out their roster.  Here's a capgeek roster from a friend:

http://capgeek.com/cap-calculator/roster/27289

You can't go in to the season with just 12 forwards.  How is this going to work out? Trade Liles?  But who wants him at that price during a cap crunch?  Maybe Nonis hopes he cap squeeze Gunnar and Franson down to PKSubban levels?

Thoughts?

Believe there's a 3rd line wing position open.  Think it gets filled from within.

Maybe I'm being sentimental, but I wouldn't mind seeing Kaberle on the Marlies as a mentor/possible emergency call-up.  Although I don't see him as a Randy Carlyle type player.

10 million in cap space to sign Kadri, Franson, Gunnarsson?

Really, I think the Leafs match both those contracts and bury or trade Liles. You'd have to overpay Franson to get him out of Toronto. If they were to overpay Gunnarsson, the Leafs would probably take the package.

I think the Leafs will squeeze them, but I also think both sides will be a bit disappointed in the deal, which tells me it's probably pretty good. Liles and maybe Gunnarsson are probably leaving.

I bet they are banking on Rielly, Brennan and Holzer stepping up their game. The only one I would really worry about is Holzer, if he bettered his defense and speed, he'll probably be fine, if not, he may be included in a package to acquire a older stay at home.

Many say goalie competition is a good thing, but I prefer heading to camp with no goalie controversy. With the Bernier acquisition, I think the dice needs to be rolled with him and Nonis should consider moving Reimer.  If Vancouver is serious about moving Edler, perhaps Reimer plus an expiring contract (Phaneuf?) plus a prospect or pick could get it done?  Gives them a good backup with potential to replace Luongo, a dman capable of eating minutes, a future asset and, most importantly, cap space to help re-sign the Sedins next season.
