Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

Gleason is basically the prototype for the type of defencemen teams can't afford to have in their lineups anymore. Lacking mobility and lacking puck skills. These guys get exploited and exposed on all too regular a basis. More than anything else, you need guys who can skate well.

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $305,833

I like what you've done here, Bulldog.  I think you remedy a few things by adding / doing the following:

- Lupul + is traded for (fingers crossed) Alex Edler from Vancouver.  Salaries are basically a wash.
- Kadri is traded for a young player or prospect (oh, I don't know, Ryan Strome?  Probably dreaming.  Something like that, anyway).  Kulemin and Bolland both walk.  Projected salary savings $7M.
- Paul Stastny signs 5 year, $32M ($6.4/season)
- Assuming Reimer + Gunnarson is enough to land Kane (it's not, I'm afraid), Kane moves onto the second line.
- And for my psychedelic 'pi?ce de r?sistance', the Leafs trade Clarkson + prospect / pick to Buffalo for Christian (don't call me Jack) Ehrhoff.  Sign Jussi Jokinen to 1 yr, $2.5M deal as a stopgap.  I guess that means Gleason has to be moved somewhere...

I acknowledge it's not perfect, and the third line is a pretty steep drop-off that isn't exactly a shut down defensive unit nor one that would add much offense.  But I figure the Leafs won't be serious contenders next year anyhow and these deals keep them relatively young and move a big problem contract for one that at least addresses a need.

Looks pretty good to me.  I'm not sure it's all realistic, but I like the overhaul.  For instance, you note that it might take more to get Kane, but since you're already moving Kadri, you could put him into that deal:  Kadri + rights to Reimer + Gunner/Franson for Kane, maybe?

Lineup wise, I'd probably swap Komarov and Ashton.
I'd look for a better option than Frazer McLaren.  Maybe Devane or something?

I wouldn't worry about this.  Just because the line is sitting in the 3rd slot doesn't mean it needs to be a shutdown line.  In my opinion, I'd have the 4th line (with Komarov and Ashton swapped) do shutdown duties anyway, with Komarov leading the way.  That might require a better option than Smith, though - maybe Brian Boyle?

And realistically, to save cap space, we need to have guys like Holland, Ashton and D'Amigo in the lineup.  They should be getting adequate ice time in my mind, but I can understand their ice time fluctuating with their effectiveness.

Agreed.

Also, in agreement with your points, the Leafs need to get more out of the Ashtons and D'Amigo's of the world.  Call it the Eastern bias, but I look at some of Anaheim and San Jose's third liners and I think, "Why can't the Leafs get some of that?".

With both Bernier and Lupes out for the season and lets not kid ourselves - no playoffs, can we please see D'Amigo and Ashton in top line minutes? What could hurt? Call up Holland too. Sit Clarkson and Bolland. Please. Please. Please!

Agreed MC, lets give the kids the chance to play and if Bolland happens to get hurt we cannot trade him or the better question is can we trade him?  Clarkson needs to rebound with the new coach as Randy is history for sure. Leweike doesn't like losers and Randy is about as usefull as that big granite sudury rock he placed in front of the locker room. Hell Kessel and Phaneuf use that bobble as a paper weight for their spare cash.

so you would have a defense of just reily's and gardiners?  Watch the shots against go up to 50 a night.

Unless it is proven Phaneuf was playing hurt for the past month or so, I really think it may be time to start looking at trading him. If there are suitable replacements out there for Franson and Dion, this team could have a whole new foundation on the back end from which to build.

I'd keep Reilly, Gardiner, Gunnarson, and Ranger (who has started to look much better of late)

Tack on 2 solid puck moving, hard-hitting D-men and you may have the nucleus of something much better than we had this season.

Phaneuf is +3 on the year, playing for a team that is -19.  He is also playing against the other teams best players.  You've got to admit he is good defensively.  I agree Franson should be traded.  He is -18 and is going to ask for too much money.

I'd have a defence full of guys that can actually skate, be they Riellys and Gardiners or Gunnarssons. The Gleasons of the league are detrimental.

You can have guys that can skate that aren't exactly like Rielly and Gardiner you know.  Nevermind the fact that the Leafs actually get outshot less with Gardiner on the ice than any other D on the team and actually get more shot attempts with him on the ice than the opposition does.

Trade Bozak while his value is highest, sign Stastny.

I wish. It'd take a new GM to make that happen though.

Am I the only one that is starting to think the Leafs might just stick with the current top line? I mean, Bozak, minus the injury, has had a pretty good season.

It leaves for other options within the line-up, like a defenseman and the reworked 3rd and 4th lines.

I absolutely think that they will, I'm just not sure it's a good idea. I'll give Bozak all the credit in the world for his production this season, but I'm skeptical he'll repeat it. It's kind of like Clarkson. I think he deserves full blame and ridicule for how he's played this season, but I also don't think he'll ever be this bad again.

Legit never done one of these Armchair GM things before.  My first attempt at a Bozak-less, Stastny-full Leafs:
