World Cup 2014

It almost looked like FIFA stuffed an axtra 100 or so in the refs pocket, but they wouldnt pay anyone off would they? Naw, not FIFA... terrible homer reffing...and I have no dog in the fight at all

More great football today - what a tournament so far.
Huge opportunity tomorrow for the Oranje to get into the last 4 for the second consecutive World Cup. Costa Rica is probably going to go into a defensive shell and either try and catch Holland on a counter attack or just hope to get it to pks. With respect I don't think they have the skill to shut the big 3 down <Robben / Van Persie / Sneijder>, maybe 1, possibly 2, but never the 3. Hup Holland

Luiz's FK screamer today takes the lead in nicest goal of the WC IMO...40+ yards out...dead / knuckle-ball with no spin on it...impossible to save...top corner...GOLAZO! Not bad for a central defender!

This was Van Gaal's to win...

In another stroke of tactical genius at this year's World Cup, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal pulled Jasper Cillessen moments after the Ajax goalkeeper had saved a shot from Marcos Urena in extra time.

The trick is good," said Krul, who plays for Newcastle. "A lot of preparation went into it."

The Krul substitution will only boost Van Gaal's reputation as a coach who leaves nothing to chance and who has a golden touch with replacements. And it kept his tenure with the Netherlands alive for two more matches before he becomes the manager at Manchester United next season.

Zuniga issues apology...

http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/world-cup-2014/colombias-zuniga-apologizes-for-foul-on-neymar/

.... but....

...Brazilian great Ronaldo believes it was intentional...

?We could see on television there was an intention by the Colombia player to actually cause some harm,? Ronaldo said. ?I don?t think it was a normal football play. I do believe it was aggressive.?

?I thought it was a highly violent and unlawful move by the Colombia player, but that is not important anymore,? Ronaldo said. ?We are fearful and sad for the loss of our player.?

Sharing the news conference with Ronaldo, former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro agreed that Zuniga appeared to want to hurt Neymar.

?I didn?t like that very high knee so that leads me to believe it was a foul with intention to actually cause harm,? said Cannavaro, who was captain of the 2006 World Cup winning team.

Last 4 two World Cups in a row - but the work is not done. Argentina on Wednesday for another crack at football's ultimate glory. Here's a little Dennis Bergkamp brilliance from Argentina v Holland quarter finals at France '98, the last time the two countries have met...DENNIS BERGKAAAAAMP!!!!

Scary description...

Neymar couldn't feel his legs after the hit that resulted in a fractured vertebra

It's 7-1 Germany.  Game over.  Guess not having Neymar in the lineup  proved a huge dent for Brazil.  Still can't believe the score.

Germany's Klose, who plays with Lazio in the Italian league, set a WC goal-scoring record with his 16th of his career, surpassing Brazil's great Ronaldo in that category.

DEUTSCHLAND by a touchdown!  Wow..not much of a game from an excitement point of view but definitely a memorable one.

Now if Netherlands wins tomorrow it would assure a european world cup win in south america.

Also, Klose passes Ronaldo at 15  but Muller is already at 14 goals.

It's a different Muller who has 14. Gerd Muller who scored 10 goals in the 1970 World Cup.

I don't watch a ton of soccer but I feel like 5-0 by the 32 minute mark is bad.

Not only the biggest ever semi final win in history, but the first time Brazil have lost a competitive game at home in 39 years.

What a disaster. I don't think losing Neymar hurt Brazil as much as losing Silva at the back did - that was schoolboy defending. They just fell apart after the Muller goal opened the scoring. I feel bad for the little kids they were showing crying in the stands - nothing like experiencing the crushing lows of being a sports fan at 8 years old.
