So Suarez got 9 matches and 4 months

Big deal.  If only the referee had given him a red card (& a subsequent prompt ejection), Uruguay would never have scored that goal.  It was Suarez's cornerkick afterall that set up their goal.  The score probably would have remained a scoreless draw and Italy would have advanced I it's group.

Oh well, it didn't happen.

That's the stupid thing about it.  Banning him after the fact means nothing for Italy.  Should have gotten a red card right then and there.

missed calls happen in games..like this is one of those things that's not just exclusive to soccer.  the nhl this past season had a few examples of guys only being disciplined after the fact, in situations that also didn't help the team that the infraction came against.  also who knows what the outcome of the game had of been...that's what makes it worth watching ..you don't know how it's going to turn out.

I have to agree with Italian keeper in that reffing didn't help Italy, but it was the lack of goal scoring that put them out of the tournament.

The 4 month soccer ban is 9 regulation games for Liverpool.

9 EPL matches plus 3 champions league matches and 2 rounds of the League cup.

I love it. That's what the Scousers get for repeatedly going to bat for a racist / biter / all-world @sshole. I doubt we see him in the EPL ever again.

Oh well, the Italy haters are having their day.  :-\

Too bad for gli Azzurri.  This obviously wasn't going to be their year.

Anyway, I would like to see the Netherlands win something (the Dutch people celebrate Canada's liberation of Holland during VE Day every year with much fanfare.  Much appreciated & passed on from generation to generation).

Besides, I used to know a few people from there, among the nicest I've met.

So, for me now, if it isn't going to be Italy, then let it be Nederland.  Hup Holland!

The Tulip Festival in Ottawa is a yearly reminder of the goodwill and love the great people of the Netherlands have for the city & more importantly the country. Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa as the family had been staying in Canada while the Nazis occupied the Netherlands.

Couldn't be happier about Spain / Portugal / Italy being knocked out already. Spain & Italy have had enough success in the past 15 years - it's time for a new World Cup champion again.

In 1989 as a 12 year old I was lucky enough to be invited to a soccer camp being put on by Rinus Michels <Holland's manager for several years including the Euro '88 championship & inventor of "total football">. Been Oranje ever since - hup hup!

Credit to Chili would took Brazil to the absolute limit today before losing on pks. Colombia has Uruguay on the brink up 2 nil in the 86th. So qf match 1 is set with Brazil v Colombia. James' first goal for Colombia (he has the brace) is easily in the top 3 of nicest golazos so far this World Cup. Very impressed by Colombia who are doing all this without arguably their best player Falcao.

Netherlands v Mexico tomorrow - Hup Hup!

Just established my neighbourhood is 97% Colombian.  There has been a constant roar and pounding drums for the last 20 minutes straight.  Kind of cool actually.

This definitely has been the World Cup of the South Americans so far.

wow that was an exciting game but a rough call on Mexico for that last minute penalty kick... The Dutch came out flat but dominated the 2nd half after getting down by one. I was glad to see the Netherlands advance but that wasn't how I would have wanted it

Yeah tough call but I don't know what M?rquez was thinking with that tackle...on Robben..in Fergie time...in a somewhat harmless area.
What a screamer from Sneijder on the tieing goal. The Dutch are bending but they've so far refused to break - fantastic stuff. Oranje majic. Hup Holland

Once the Greeks scored, I think the Ticos plan was to take their chances in PKs. Especially playing the last 25 minutes a man down.

what did Greece's coach get sent off for?

This could be why:

The Greeks owned the overtime period, pressing the Ticos
throughout. Their physical play had a number of the Costa Ricans, even
Navas, nursing injuries, and Konstantinos Mitroglou very nearly had the game winner in the stoppage for overtime.

The Australian referee, Benjamin Williams, reacted sharply, and somewhat strangely to both benches. In one instance he ran halfway across the field to
give a card to Costa Rican reserve midfielder Oscar Granados.

Just before the shootout, he ejected Greece?s Portuguese coach, Fernando
Santos.

That denotes something.  :)

This is by now old news, but, comes to show the Uruguayans as having no shame.  And for the end result, I, too say, thank you, Colombia!

The Colombians did a massive favour for millions of neutrals supporters around the world by eliminating their South American counterparts. Uruguay fully deserved this humiliation, not only because of their dour and cynically defensive tactics?their boring brand of soccer stood out against the backdrop of so many other nations playing with genuine adventure in Brazil. But also for the way that manager Oscar Tabarez and his players shamelessly defended Luis  Suarez...and how they suggested?with miraculously straight faces?that somehow the Liverpool man was the true victim. Good riddance, Uruguay!

It's too bad that at least three of their teams will be out by the semi-finals. Four South American teams in the same bracket in the round of 16.
