It's considered ludicrous because if Burke had the first overall pick, would he really have taken Rielly?  Would people have been happy with that pick? I don't think that's the pick he would have made if he had the 1st overall pick.  Therefore it's ludicrous to say "we had him rated as the first pick".

I guess I just don't see an incongruity there, you could rate him first but take Galchenyuk to suit your positional needs.

I'm not sure making people happy really matters here and now.

He doesn't need to state it.  Whether it's factually true or not.  It doesn't need to come out.  Not only has he made a statement that may put his scouts in a bad light, he has also fired a big ol' FU at Columbus and the Islanders as they drafted defencemen before the Leafs, and he has pretty much come out and said "You drafted wrong".  I don't mind the bravado.  I mind the fact that he can't back it up.

Rielly hasn't played a game yet.

As I said, he doesn't need to state it.  Whether it's factually true or not.  The bravado statement was more of a general statement of how Burke generally conducts himself.  I mind the fact that he still has that attitude, but really has nothing to back it up over the last 4 years.  Why invite more criticism?  Why bring on more scrutiny to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization?

Yeah, but if Rielly is as good as Burke thinks he is, then he will have backed it up.

A big FU? Really? All Burke said was that they had him Ranked 1st. Whether that's true or not it's hardly an FU to the other teams.

And all I have said is *I* don't like the statement, yet others on this board don't seem to agree with my position and have stated as much.  Now lets look at the ultra competitive world of professional sports.  *We* had him ranked first...it implies the statements "*Our* guy is better than your guy" and "*We* took the better player".  I'm sure the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Islanders love the fact that the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs is out there saying that he felt they got the best player in the draft.  All you have to say is "We really liked this player.  We feel we got a guy that can really help turn this organization around."  Not "We had this guy ranked as the first overall pick."

Leafs draft Matthew Finn at #35

TSN Scout Craig Button:
Matthew is not going to show up in highlight videos on any type of a regular basis. It's not in his game to be flashy but it is his game to be incredibly effective. That effectiveness translates into every area of the game and all of its situations. Simply put, he is a player who completes plays. He does it with the puck. Defensively in getting the puck out of danger. Offensively in reading the play and getting the puck to areas where his team can attack. He is superb in transition and can do it skating with the puck or passing the puck. He does it without the puck. He has very good body positioning and stick position where he can keep opponents at bay. His skating is strong in all regards and he asserts with his body & with excellent lower body strength and balance, he's a hard player to gain an advantage on. He has excellent sense and understands what is unfolding and what the appropriate response should be. He has great poise playing and the challenges of the game do not faze him in any way. He is a player who makes teams stronger.

And if he's not? Does that argument not go both ways?  Also, do the Leafs have a whole lot of clout in the respectability department lately?  Or are they still riding that whole "We make money hand over fist, so suck it" argument?

Sounds kinda like Gunnarsson.

Apparently he was listed at 16 according to TSN's mock draft.

Maybe they really did have him at #1, and he was just stating the truth? I mean, it's not like scouts have never been wrong in thir rankings. That's true of the Leafs scouts as well.

Again, the point is Rielly hasn't played a game yet. Why don't you give him a chance to prove Burke wrong before you declare it?

It does work both ways. As I said above, give him a chance. You won't ever know until you know.

At this point, who knows?  Rielly could turn out to be the next Brian Leetch.  Burke is a salesman, he's just "selling" the pick.

He does and yeah, it seems he fell quite a bit judging by a couple lists. - Glad we got him.

Talk about LOADING UP on Defencemen.

I think he's just taking BPA, instead of landing a center for the sake of it. Burke needs to trade Dmen though, that much is known.

The more I think of it, I think Burke is going to do that Schenn for JVR trade.
