2012 NHL Entry Draft

Wait, our first 2 picks are Canadian (one being from Ontario?) Man, Cherry and some of the other media boobs are going to have to find some new material.  :P

It's considered ludicrous because if Burke had the first overall pick, would he really have taken Rielly?  Would people have been happy with that pick? I don't think that's the pick he would have made if he had the 1st overall pick.  Therefore it's ludicrous to say "we had him rated as the first pick".

I guess I just don't see an incongruity there, you could rate him first but take Galchenyuk to suit your positional needs.

I'm not sure making people happy really matters here and now.

He doesn't need to state it.  Whether it's factually true or not.  It doesn't need to come out.  Not only has he made a statement that may put his scouts in a bad light, he has also fired a big ol' FU at Columbus and the Islanders as they drafted defencemen before the Leafs, and he has pretty much come out and said "You drafted wrong".  I don't mind the bravado.  I mind the fact that he can't back it up.

A big FU? Really? All Burke said was that they had him Ranked 1st. Whether that's true or not it's hardly an FU to the other teams.

And all I have said is *I* don't like the statement, yet others on this board don't seem to agree with my position and have stated as much.  Now lets look at the ultra competitive world of professional sports.  *We* had him ranked first...it implies the statements "*Our* guy is better than your guy" and "*We* took the better player".  I'm sure the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Islanders love the fact that the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs is out there saying that he felt they got the best player in the draft.  All you have to say is "We really liked this player.  We feel we got a guy that can really help turn this organization around."  Not "We had this guy ranked as the first overall pick."

Maybe they really did have him at #1, and he was just stating the truth? I mean, it's not like scouts have never been wrong in thir rankings. That's true of the Leafs scouts as well.

Again, the point is Rielly hasn't played a game yet. Why don't you give him a chance to prove Burke wrong before you declare it?

Because it has been 4 years of "Give Burke a chance to...."

The more I think of it, I think Burke is going to do that Schenn for JVR trade.

I wouldn't link the two. These guys are still a likely to be a couple years away, at best.

No, but he needs to address the forwards and he already had a glut of blueliners. Either way he drafted, we have to trade a defenseman or two IMO.

So Toronto needs forwards and keep drafting D-men and the Oilers need D-men and keep drafting forwards.

At least we'll make good trading partners down the line.

They haven't had a huge steal since 2004. I guess reputation is everything.

I wouldn't call Franzen a huge steal, either. Really, their reputation is based around 2 picks from over a decade ago. Outside of that, their drafting has really been pretty ordinary.

I'm not talking about Burke. I'm talking about Rielly.

Clearly our conversation went of the rails somewhere, because I hold nothing against Rielly.  I am upset with the way Burke has conducted himself.

It's amazing how much positive impact winning the lottery by drafting two superstars over a decade ago (and another one 2 decades ago) can have on a franchise. They haven't had to draft well for most of the entire 2000's and people still think they're drafting geniuses.

P.S. I think Johan Franzen is hugely underrated. Miserable to play against, 30 goal scorer and a 3rd round pick. Seems a massive steal to me.

It was 'give Morgan a chance' but you've made your point, you don't think he had to make that statement.

Morrison said something like... 'in an ideal world of course we would have liked to have taken a centre... we couldn't pass him up at that spot... we had him ranked really high.'

Is that the softer sell you're looking for?

One 30 goal season, injuries are already taking their toll on him, he was 24 when he was drafted, so his career was already prematurely shortened . . . a good pick and a good player, and, a steal, sure, but, not someone I'd call a massive steal or anything, but, that's getting into a semantic argument.
