2019 Draft Discussion

I suppose this reduces to the old argument about picking for need vs. BPA.  Of course, by the time you get to even as as high 53rd pick in the draft the demonstrable talent differences between the players available are already narrowing, and by the later rounds it is, as I think everyone would agree, a crap shoot.  Seems to me that you might use at least a few of the lower picks to address gaps in the system, since the chances of any of them panning out are low.

Those gaps in the system can be addressed by trading our crap shoots that pan out for other teams? crapshoots that pan out. And, if you want the best odds of a crapshoot panning out, you take those that you think have the highest ceiling rather than specific attributes. In the draft, you always always need to be looking for guys who will provide maximum value as assets. Trade to fill need, draft to fill value.

It's also pretty debatable that grinding, physical wingers with size is a big weakness in the system right now with guys like Marchment and Engvall and so on. Honestly, I look at the system and the things that stick out as real problems is just a general dearth of talent and especially down the middle.
And maybe even moreso in net...if Freddie has any sort of injury issues we're in trouble.

Trouble as in "sunk."  Unless a Binnington emerges.

This Nick Robertson stands out.  Sounds like a future Bruin mauler.

?Robertson?s work ethic makes him stand out from both his peers and opponents on the ice. He forechecks hard, backchecks hard, supports low in the zone and strides as fast as he can to get on offence ? where he shines the most. He isn?t just a unique, undersized grinder. He is also a very skilled player. He goes to the corners and to the front of the net, finds the puck, and digs it out to attack the opposing defensive box using his shifty hands and size to his advantage to slip in and out looking for scoring chances.?

Dubas literally talked to every GM trying to make a deal.
That's what was apparently reported. He was the busiest guy in the room.

Haha I meant that for the picture with two phones up. But he did seem to be beating every trail.

Damn, Nick Robertson outscored Semyon Der-Arguchintsev by 9 points in 8 less games last year.

Yeah, says the guy who doesn't capitalize his proper name.

I really sucks that the NHL has a rule that small, skilled players can never be traded for "heavier" players.  We're stuck with all of of these tiny lil' fellas forever.

Never really thought of that thought process. Rather than draft for possible success let's go with drafting for possible future trade value.

If only that was the point.

I forgot to do this last year so this one is a two-fer

The Dubas template for later picks:
Priorities: high hockey IQ and puck skills
Room for growth: skating, strength, size

Three years ago, there seemed to be an emphasis on big defensemen. Is skill maybe overtaking size or do you go for what is available taking it in combination?

Dubas: We have our scouts and we have very defined criteria we want to draft from. These are young guys, so you never know how much they are going to grow or if they?re going to grow, but I think as we all know, we?re not the same weight as when we were 17/18. Things change, sometimes mightily so. We?ve got a good development program that can help our guys with their strength work. Rich Rotenberg will immediately get his hands on these guys, and Trevor St. Agathe in the weight room and with their habits off the ice, and Scott Pellerin on the ice. We will be on our way. We are excited about the group that we got despite not having a first-round pick. We are excited to start working with them here.

Don Cherry shat all over the Leafs draft

Don Cherry is just pro Canadian kids to a fault. His record coaching was terrible because they refused to take imports when everyone else was.
