He?d definitely publicly take responsibility for it

First time in 35 years as a leafs fan that I honestly don?t care. Nothing to get excited about, they cannot play to there pay.
Always love fools who say they have no heart, no guts and all that other bs. You have no clue what it takes to not only make it, but play at that level. Not a single player made it to the NHL without having heart. The biggest issue with the Leafs is actually their talent. They think they can get by with only using their skill instead of hard work. When/if they learn to work hard consistently and Dubas fills in the D, this team will be a force.

I wonder if part of it is the market they're in. Constantly being fauned over after a few game winning streak, all the celebrity status that comes from being a Leaf. I wonder if you could transport this entire team to a market like Columbus and suddenly they'd be a different team and play with more drive each night. It's an interesting thought that I can never prove.

That's an interesting take and could be part of it.

I suppose my argument against it being a major factor is that Tampa went through kind of the same thing a few years ago. They had a bunch of injuries but seemed to just float through the regular season as though they were guaranteed to make the playoffs...and ended up missing. Since then they've been a much more consistent, hard-working team.

A small part of me almost hopes the Leafs miss the playoffs this season if that's what it's going to take for the young core to learn that lesson. Then maybe they'll stop messing around in October and November and treat every 2 points as being of vital importance. This should be a team that takes a serious run at home ice advantage for the first round or two every year, including winning the conference once in a while. We shouldn't be scraping and clawing just to get in.

This is just a bizarre year where you can't really prognosticate on much when the initial large hole was dug when Babcock was behind the bench. I don't know Keefes pace off the top of my head but afaik it should comfortably get them in. The issue is they started facing adversity under Keefe for the first time and now we've got everyone coming up with whatever cliche is easy.

I think there's some truth in both arguments. The idea that Leaf players tend to be overrated due to the attention they receive in hockey's mega-market is nothing new. The first time I read this sentiment was in the 70's.

Also, there are many examples of teams that struggled through a maturity process that included failure only to come out stronger.

Leafs have the talent, no doubt. Will they come out of this stronger or will they just cruise along never achieving? Will they be like the Washington Capitals who finally pulled together and won a cup or will they be like the talent laden Ottawa Senators that kept losing to a better coached and grittier Leaf team?

For all the times I've heard this I've never actually seen a real example of it. I've been on this board for near 20 years and it's not like we were ever ducking "Mats Sundin should win the Hart!" threads or people saying that James Reimer would one day be feted as a god among men.

If anything, it's been the other way around. With people on the board saying things like "Maybe it's not actually Phil Kessel's fault that the team around him sucks" during a time when newspapers were staking out his favourite lunch spots and before he won two cups.

I was talking about the players overrating themselves. They don't pay attention to boards like this. They see TV media attention and fans in every NHL arena kissing their butts.
