I'm pulling for Engvall to get a legitimate shot at a 4th line role. I thought he was great in the pre-season, and has kept it rolling from the marlies games I've seen.

If Marleau is finishing his term, more marlies are going to have to step in to make the cap work.

Really buried the lede on this one.

A few months later, a story from The Canadian Press lamented the stale atmosphere inside the Gardens and suggested the mascot was not doing much to improve matters. In fact, the story noted, ?Carlton the Bear spent the better part of one recent evening chatting up usherettes.?

Initial draft position has been locked in.

The Maple Leafs pick position is 22. Los Angeles has that pick in the first round, and the Leafs later picks (order by reverse standings) are numbered:

2nd round - #53
3rd round - #84
4th round - #115 and #121 (from St. Louis)
5th round - #146
7th round - #204 (from Dallas) and #208
The NHL Entry Draft is June 21 and 22 in Vancouver.

So Dermott is out until like December and Hyman won't likely play until November.  Eesh.

Barring any interesting trades on the left side, Calle Rosen likely get more minutes to start.
If he has a good camp, Teemu Kivihalme now has more games to work with, or maybe Sandin.

Liljegren will be getting a look as well. I already think Sandin will be here.

There were some reports that the Leafs were involved in discussions for an additional top 4 d-man near the deadline. Maybe that gets revisited over the offseason.

Uncomprehensible cap wise.

Not if its a bigger deal that sees forward(s) going the other way.

I think Liljegren will be up here, but that's not because of Dermott's absence. I think Sandin gets the call at the deadline after being used as the 1D with the Marlies next season.

The way Chris Johnston talked about it, it was roster pieces out for collateral (and cap space) to in turn pick up a top RD, and he had no idea who that would've been. I think that report of the top 4 d-man is the reason why Babcock's initial response to adding Muzzin was so muted. Trouba, Spurgeon?

Sandin is already being used as a 1D. I don't have all the numbers but from the games I've heard about he's playing 25 mins a night. I'm no expert but I've seen him play and I think he's on the cusp right now. He's been that good.

I can see the Leafs trading away a Nylander, Kadri etc., to get themselves a D man. I think it happens this off season. Dubas can really put his stamp on this team this summer.

Or if Marleau gets moved out in a separate deal - which, yeah, easier said than done, but not impossible.

The only way I see this happening is if the Sharks win the cup, Thornton retires, and they want to bring Marleau back for one last kick at the can as a Shark as their OGWAC.  But even in that scenario, the Leafs are probably retaining salary.

The only way I see Marleau off our cap is gets paid his signing bonus, gets traded and retires.

My understanding....Retiring does not take him off the Cap. Signed a 35+ contract.

But trading him will.
