Everyone has officially lost their minds. If this is even remotely accurate Treliving needs to shop Kampf asap.

Yeah. That?s just insanity. Prices for rental Cs are astronomical. If he even returns a 2nd rounder, it?s an over pay!

Thinking about trade possibilities (and what appears to be a lucrative seller's trade market) only makes me wonder/lament about how this team would look with a different coach and new philosophies. I mean, I am intrigued even simply by balancing the existing group of forwards (to maybe something like this):

McMann  Matthews Nylander
Bertuzzi Domi    Marner
Knies  Tavares  Robertson
Holmberg Kampf Jankrok

All four lines could have a regular shift (that 4th line was essentially our 3rd line for the start of last year) and you could really maximize each player's minutes, instead of the top-heavy, exhausting the stars-type scenario we keep seeing this season. Tavares can take the odd shift with the top line to get his minutes up (and keep McMann's down) and would benefit from seeing less-competitive minutes/opponents as the 3rd line centre. Marner offsets Domi's negative defensive value, just as Matthews offsets Nylander's. Robertson's left handed snipe could be nasty on the off-wing and Knies gets to see less dangerous opponents as well.

As for the defence, while it is quite average, again I'd love to see a balanced approach that somewhat stabilizes each pairing:

Rielly  Benoit
McCabe  Liljegren
Brodie  Timmins

Albeit some of the sample size is limited, Rielly does seem to excel with more defensive, physical d-men (Hainsey, Lybushkin, Schenn) and Brodie could then move to his natural side, providing some stability for Timmins. You could even go with a 11-7 formation and sub Giordano in for McMann (moving Holmberg to that vacant spot) and have the ability to keep everyone fresh, spot Brodie in here and there for Benoit, especially if he struggles on the right side. There is a bit of flexibility.

And as for the trade market, Matt Dumba probably wouldn't cost much and might fit in nicely to the right of Rielly. Benoit-Brodie 3rd pairing with Gio and Timmins as extras isn't anything to sneeze at.

Anyway that's just my little armchair GM spiel, thanks for listening ;)

I like trying McMann on a scoring line. He's miscast where he is.
Whoever has been there on the left side hasn't set the world on fire.

Rielly Benoit might be too much to ask of Benoit but that's something I hadn't thought of. Benoit is so dedicated to defense, it might work.

Giordano & Brodie were a good pair in Calgary. That might be something worth looking at if Brodie goes to the 3rd pairing.

With the D talent seemingly the weakest link, and the 4th line not doing much, 7 D seems worthy if an offensive dman fills in for Rielly on the PP so Rielly can help more at ES or PK.

There's always the chance of him turning back into a pumpkin come playoff time, but as a pending UFA with a $1.5mil cap hit Tatar could be a decent trade target who likely wouldn't command a big return if Seattle falls more out of a playoff spot and sells.

I think this might be Connor Clifton + a fwd (Greenway?)

Any chance the Leafs swing a deal for Markstrom, accepting that goalies are voodoo?

Saros is on the verge of being available  too but I don?t think the Leafs are quite as desperate (or cap flexible) as New Jersey for goalies.

If Nashville ends up selling at the deadline I think acquiring a Carrier+Trenin duo from them could really round out the type of line-up we've had over the past week or so once everyone is back:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Bertuzzi-Domi-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Robertson
Trenin-Kampf-Jarnkrok

Rielly-Carrier
Brodie-Liljegren
Benoit-McCabe

Samsonov
Woll

Trenin's a checking forward with good defensive metrics who can hit and kill penalties. Along with a returning Jarnkrok they could finally form a Kampf 4th line that can properly eat a ton of defensive minutes, which is key because even if that middle-6 forward group continues to play well they would still require some level of sheltering. Jarnkrok gets buried a little in this line-up which isn't entirely fair to him but he can still take shifts on any of the top-3 lines in certain situations to boost his minutes.

Carrier's an undersized, mobile two-way RHD who might not exactly be the ideal defenceman we're looking for but his defensive metrics are pretty good, he can kill penalties, and he can block a lot of shots. And if the play of the other two defensive pairings over the past week and a half can be counted on to continue then Rielly might not need a higher end partner to carry tough minutes since the load can be shared by everyone.

Alternatively a Sam Carrick+Ilya Lyubushkin rental duo from Anaheim could round out the line-up in similar ways (but not exactly be as good) if the Nashville duo is unattainable.

How do we feel about our C position? Feels odd to have Domi as the 2C...

I think in situations where Tavares and Nylander are split up like this the distinction between the 2nd and 3rd lines is entirely meaningless.

With that said I feel roughly the same way I would if Tavares was 2C and Domi 3C: it creates a middle-6 forward group that can't really be expected to handle defensive assignments consistently. That puts a lot of pressure on the 1st and 4th lines to do so. I don't think that's a problem that can really be solved this season, especially if a guy like Henrique is going to cost a 1st rounder, so it's best to just accept them for what they are and hope to beef up the 4th line into something that can take some of the defensive pressure off the 1st line at times.

Any thoughts after seeing Dumba last night?  Is he good at defense? Is he a reasonable investment on the right with Rielly?

I think he'd probably be fine as a Plan C/D option at the last minute, but I wouldn't give up more than a mid-round pick for him. He's a RHD that could play with Rielly which accomplishes the goal of keeping the other two pairings together but he hasn't exactly had a good season with Arizona so doesn't move the needle all that much.
