Armchair President/GM 2023-2024

I don't know much about Comtois, although him not being qualified was expected by many. Seems like a decent option to at least consider for a reclamation project.

I don't know. I highly doubt Kerfoot gets a raise. Kampf may get a bump. Could be due diligence.

That's what I suspect. When your team has valuable contributors heading to UFA, you have to at least see what they're looking for, how firm they are on those demands, etc. Give them something to think about if the market for them doesn't develop as they hoped. I'd happily take them both back, as long as the cost make sense.

It's possible they won't want to trade him within the division but if the Panthers need to move Anthony Duclair for cap reasons and the trend of cap dumps being dealt for underwhelming returns continues I'd be all over that for the Leafs.

Any takers on bringing in Karlsson (if at all possible)?

The hockey gods heard our need for cheap PK specialist and face puncher who can sometimes score

How much interest can there possibly be with the Leafs cap restraints . Unless they plan on moving Nylander out?

Probably occurred before they signed Klingberg?

Seems beyond unlikely but perhaps Karlsson at 8 million for Klingberg, Domi, Murray + actually valuable assets?

Just needs to grow another 2/3 of an inch?

Reddit leafs armchair GM thread (title makes me think that someone on these boards posts there as well):

Some interesting ideas on how to deal with Murray - basically try to trade him for other high salaried players that you could guarantee to LTIR. Eg: Ryan Ellis. But also reasons why those trades won?t work out.

I wonder if we see something like Jarnkrok for Andrew Peeke in Columbus. Peeke's a 25-year old, 6'3 210lbs RHD who could play that physical D role that Treliving is apparently seeking.

With the additions Columbus made Peeke, who last season played a top-4 role with them, would get dropped down to their bottom pair or even possibly to the press box on most/some nights. They also have Erik Gudbranson there on a bigger contract to fill their physical RHD role.

What Columbus doesn't have a lot of is two-way forwards. It's mostly younger guy who haven't exactly developed their game yet and their stars (Gaurdeau and Laine) who aren't exactly know for their defence. Jarnkrok seems like exactly the type of plug and play player that Babcock would love (which is also why Keefe would be reluctant to see him moved granted).

They both have 3 years left on their deals. Peeke comes in at a higher AAV with $2.75mil, so a straight up swap would still have the Leafs over the cap by a bit even with Timmins and Lafferty off the roster. If you could get Columbus to retain 30% of his deal (or thinking outside the box a little, trade Timmins to a team that could retain on Peeke instead in a bit of a 3-way trade) this roster comes in with $40k in cap space remaining:

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Marner
Domi-Tavares-Nylander
Knies-Kampf-Lafferty
McMann-Gambrell-Reaves

Rielly-Peeke
Brodie-Klingberg
McCabe-Liljegren
Giordano

Samsonov
Woll

You could swap Holmberg in for Gambrell and still be under the cap by $15k. Or sign a difference 4C like Jujhar Khaira for under $800k.

Here's what I have for a Leafs opening day roster. Timmons waived.

Maybe McMann in for Holmberg?

It's obvious something is going to happen so here's my 2 cents
If Nylander is the one going out then our Capfriendly space is 5M
If we could trade him to NYR then they would need to free 5M off their Capso I was thinking Nylander gets to go play with Zibanejad and fans have something in return for losing Kane and Tarasenko in return the 5M we take back could be Barclay Goodrow C/LW (3.65) and Braden Schneider RD (0.8) and Will Cuylle.  They won't be able to sign these guys and pay Kakko and Lafreniere and they already have Fox and Trouba playing RD. That gets us under the cap and gets us to a 23 man roster.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Bertuzzi-Tavaras-Domi
Goodrow-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Reeves-Holmberg-Lafferty

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Klingberg
Giordano-Liljgren
Schneider-Timmins
Samsonov
Woll

Would be really hard to see Nylander go but Goodrow would be good now and Schneider will be good soon and Cuylle will be really good soon

Anyways.........

There are only 4 players in the top 10 in these two lists.

Kevin Fiala above McD. This is the kind of stuff where analytics gets a bad name. Reminds me of "Freddy the Goat" is actually good talk.

Fiala beat McDavid by 0.01 in an all-encompassing 5-on-5 "playmaking" score. That's really not that outrageous when you consider that Fiala had one of the highest 5-on-5 assist rates in the league last season while McDavid finished 35 in the league in 5-on-5 assists.

If anything the fact that whatever else went into that stat was able to properly bridge the gap between their actual assist totals and what their true "playmaking" ability is is pretty impressive.

edit: Now that's also not to say "these stats are absolutely perfect and should never be questioned" because like everything there's room for error. I just think that specific issue with the rankings isn't all that warranted.

If anything, this demonstrates the power of analytics that go beyond point totals and feelings. I appreciate Kevin Fiala more now (and hate Marner's contract and upcoming negotiation even more now).

I have no clue how they get cap-compliant for the start of the season.

Trade candidates: Nylander and Brody

I would love to see Klinberg or Tavares cap hits freed up but I don't think that's an option. No LTIR candidates outside of Murray and Muzzin as well.

I think Brody for a rugged more affordable D is the way to go.

However, the Nylander math seems impossible next year with Marner/Matthews/Tavares contracts. We'll see I guess here's to hoping the cap goes up massively next season.
